Anyone running the Mobil 1 Full Synthetic High Mileage Extended Performance over the Synthetic High Mileage? Price difference is minimal I think $3 more for the 5qt extended performance, but I’m curious if it’s really much better. The extended says protects engine up to 20k and regular high says 10k. I personally wouldn’t go that long between oil changes regardless of which oil, but curious if anyone has noticed any difference between these two oils and if you are still changing the oil at about 5k regardless.

Bought the regular high mileage but may try the extended performance instead.

Also, anyone use any any oil additive that helps with burning oil? My uncle said he uses one 1 quart of some Lucas synthetic oil with an additive that he uses in place of one of the oil capacity quarts.

    Marketing gimmick I suppose.

Since neither the 2.7 nor the 4.0 are known for leaking oil or burning oil or any other wear/age maladies of engines (aside from blowing head gaskets). I see no reason to justify use of a HM oil in a Tacoma.

Ask (or search) over at bobistheoilguy forums. I believe the EP does perform better over long intervals due to a higher TBN (total base number; helps to counteract acidity of oil as it is used with time).

But if you change every 5k-10k, the additional cost of EP is most likely not warranted, especially if you have been doing used oil analyses and know for a fact that your TBN is still above 0 by the time you drain your chosen oil.

There are some people who use bypass filters on their engines and can get 40-50k miles of service from a single oil change (excluding top offs to make up for evaporation or blowby loss); these are the people who would be the customer who buys EP oil.

If you don't currently have problems there really isn't a need for either high mileage or extended interval oils. Marketing wank at it's finest. Change at 5k miles or 6 months, OEM filter + a quality oil, and sleep easy at night. Tacoma engines aren't picky, this is very simple stuff on our trucks.

OP you seem to keep wanting to buy miracle-in-a-bottle solutions so I'm going to quote myself from your other thread because apparently it needs repeating:

After looking at all of Mobil 1’s offerings I ended up just getting valvoline. Mobil just seems to have way too many offerings, none of which fit my uses. I definitely don’t need an oil that can go 20k between changes.

I ran Mobil 1 in my Tundra and now in my 2013 Tacoma 4.0 that just hit 180K.

I have seen the Project Farm video prior to the OP's thread.

My only question is why the Mobil 1 HM flows better at lower temps, when both oils are 5w-30? (4:00 min mark)

The EP has more conditioner that helps rejuvenate rubber so gaskets stay sealed. I’m at 180K miles and 13 years old. I have and will continue to use standard M1 every 5K miles since nothing is leaking. If it does start leaking enough that it’s a mess, I’ll put in new gaskets where it’s easy (valve covers, oil pan). If the main engine seals go, ill try AT205. When it gets too bad, I’ll buy a new truck.

Castrol is also good. Valvoline & Pennzoil are good too :)

Since my 06 blew a head gasket at 139,000 miles and ruined the engine completely I am a bit miffed. It was babied receiving red carpet treatment with only the finest oils and filters served on a silver platter every 5,000 miles or less. Now with a new engine, screw that crap. It can use standard 5W-30 M1 and whatever oil filter I grab and it can go 7,500 miles minimum or whenever I get around to it. Oil and filters are not the life limiting factors on Tacomas, car crashes (caused by cell phone texting bimbos), head gaskets and frame rust are the killers. In fact, I think it is getting Super Tech henceforth.

The nominal grade (ex: 5W30) just means its chemical characteristics fit within a range. The kinematic viscosity (centistokes) can vary between oils with the same grade, which is why it probably flowed better at lower temps.

I have been using Mobil one extended performance since new and just recently switched at 133-k to Mobil one extended performance high mileage and no leaks no problems. I change oil about 3-k.
