I heard it was good for 100K. So you extend the changes then are you neglecting the other stuff you should be looking at? No thanks I'll look at everything at 5K.

I think it makes it easier honestly. Reset the light everytime and then you only have to rotate tires and grease the zerks. You can still do an inspection of everything. No biggie.

Am I correct to assume that M1 0w-30 is fine to use with this engine being that the 0W would cause less winter wear and easier starts in winter? I only ask because I have 3 5 qt containers of it to use up.

I've used 0w-30 in mine for at least 5 of it's 10 year life. I don't have a "winter" to be concerned with, but 0w will get oil flowing faster on a cold start.

I guess I'm "that guy" that changes synthetic every 3K. I figure oil's cheap, engines aren't so if that's too soon, then that's ok.

Waste of time and money. Congrats on being that guy!

Search this forum and find me one case where changing oil at 5K-12.5K caused excessive engine wear, or find me a thread where changing at 3K helps anything at all. Here is a hint: You wont.

If 3k is all you drive per year, would it make sense then to change the oil every year?

Did I say it caused excessive wear or anything else? Here's a hint: I didn't. So don't worry about what I do with MY money and MY time. Thank you, sit down.

Like said above, its the other things that need more regular attention. I've heard its recommended to grease your U-Joints and other zerks etc every 3000-6000. I personally change my oil every 12,000 but filter and grease fittings every 6000mi.

I've done 3 oil analysis using mobil 1 5w-30 and toyota oem oil filters, also running aftermarket pro dry II air filter (afe intake). First one at 5,000mile (7 months) Blackstone said plenty of TBN left and very little wear they recommend go to 8,500. Did next analysis at 8,500 (9 months) and again plenty tbn and minimal wear recommend 10,500 miles. Did last analysis at 10,500 miles (14 months) and once again plenty tbn and low wear, they recommend do a 12,500 ml. analysis. Again these were all done with oem oil filter. Now I just use synthetic and do oil change once a year.

I have a 4 cyl and use Mobil 1. Like the above post I've bumped up my interval after getting several Blackstone analyses done. Even with 10k+ mile changes there is still plenty of TBN left. I don't have the reports handy but IIRC Blackstone said 11,500 would be no issue. I change the oil once a year after a long road trip/vacation so the miles vary some but between 10-11k. Miles are mostly highway but also 4WD low and a lot of dirt road driving for 3 weeks. So my results are similar to above and anything driven semi-normally will probably be also. I use the standard Purolator filter. My truck has ~115k miles and uses no oil, or maybe half a quart max between changes. I don't add any and it's still at or above the top dipstick line when I change it.

There is another thread on here where people posted their Blackstone reports- see if you can find that if you want more proof. Anyone using full synthetic and changing 5k miles is wasting time and $ but I know some people won't vary from their beliefs no matter what the reports say.

Also, Mobil 1 typically runs a rebate every year sometime in April/May. It's not advertised, but just search online for it next month. You get ~$12 off 5 qts (either the jug or individual quarts). IIRC it typically ends at the end of May. It takes at least a month to get the check but it ends up being cheaper than Valvoline conventional

The funny thing is, guys that still do 3K oil changes will read this, and countless others that change at around 10K and still decide to change their oil at 3K.... all for piece of mind.

As long as my engine is still under powertrain warranty, I will follow the manual even though I use Mobil 1. Once the warranty is up, I will begin stretching out the oci. I put 8-10k miles per year on my truck, so once a year oil changes are probably in my future.

If you are following the manual I guess you better use conventional, because it definitely does not approve synthetic. ;)
