CBI bed rack and sliders, Backwoods Adventure Mods front and rear bumpers, etc. And some stickers.
Part of the issue is what your buddies have. If everyone has a CB, you need a CB to talk to them. If they have HAM, you need a HAM radio (and license) to talk to them. For greater range with a CB, Single Side Band is ok, but everyone would need a SSB radio.

For running trails with friends, they all have CB's, so I went with the Uniden 520XL. Inexpensive, very small, and durable. I also have a Midland all-in-one unit that worked find with the rubber duckie antenna. A 4-foot FireStik works well mounted on the corner of the bed. The friends with the 3-foot do not transmit as well. Use a heavy spring to avoid snapping it on branches.

Thanks for that. I'm rocking a Yaesu 7900 right now, and I'm starting to realize the benefit of having a dual receive capability that I currently lack. I'm also getting into APRS. I got my baofeng and APRSdroid combo running okish, but service is sporadic based on terrain, distance to the igate and digipeater across the valley, and the rubber ducky's limitations. @medic2230's post above has me on the verge of the D710 since it can do both of those as well.

For the sake of the original discussion, here's my current setup: Yaesu 7900 with a Diamond NMO770 (2M/70CM) and a Trivec 2090-7S (LOS 1.25M/70CM + high ange SATCOM). Just added APRSDroid on a Samsung tablet to a Baofeng F8-HP yesterday for tracking, SMS/email, and station finding.

Talked to a guy on a Seattle to LA road trip last night after I found his call + station on the readout!

I mean if you have the means, the d710 is a really really sweet rig. I'm officially jealous of @medic2230 . Until I can re-do things, I'll be running a Mobilelinkd TNC so I can do RF APRS with my tablet and v71a

The dual receive is great. I monitor common call frequencies on one side, and put repeaters on the other. Also, the ability to Xrepeat is great

Went out and measured the pen pocket where my current head unit is. I think the V71 is a smidge oversize for the pocket, or at least gonna be damn close. Figure if I am upgrading, the 710 is probably the way to go.

Well the cables are still coming in for mine, but it does LOS UHF plus hemispherical UHF/SATCOM. Working with a comms geek friend that has his operational. The reception is CRAZY good across VHF through UHF. Really only good for 1.25m and 70cm Tx. Transmit on VHF with the X-wing, and you WILL fry a radio...ask me how we know  running 144.520 on a HT through it nets an SWR of 10.1

Ya'll talkin' Ham and APRS in your Taco...the D710 is an awesome rig had that in my old afford pickup. Moved it into the apartment as a base. The Yaesu FTM-400XDR has APRS, true dual receive, etc...same features as the Kenwood, but ads System Fusion if you have YSF repeaters in the area. Put that In the new Taco.

Radio under passenger seat, Diamond SG-7900 antenna above passenger tail light. Head unit is mounted using a Lido seat mount. Another one on right for the cell phone or tablet.

That's a good looking setup! Thinking I am gonna run the D710 though. I looked hard at the 400, but the head unit is massive!

Thinking I'm gonna run a D710 head, phone, and tablet off a birddawg mount. Or do 710 head and phone then keep the tablet on the pax seat ram mount, so shotgun can navigate easily if needed. Came in handy last weekend responding to a brush fire as part of an offroad race support when a 8100 truck's brake rotor exploded and blazed up some sage brush in unfamiliar territory.
