image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Here are some pictures of the 3rd gen tail gate. The screws are Torx 30, and held in place by nylon bushings. The metal that provides cross bracing to the skin flexes about 1/4" when pushing on it. You can see the rubber/silicon stuff they use compress when you do this.

Seems the strength is in the fully assembled piece, with the majority coming from the fiberglass/composite black cover piece.

I didn't remove the bed cap, it's held on by some plastic clips similar to a Molly/toggle bolt.

Reassembly I used a screwdriver since it would be very easy to strip the nylon out with an impact driver.

I can't believe Toyota still insists on creating and designing their tailgates like garbage. Why woul anyone use flexible silicone like glue to mass produce a tailgate? I was looking at my 2nd gen one the other day when installing the skin and it's design looked absolutely shoddy. I've seen a Geo Metro hatchback better designed then our tailgates.

Good thing vendors make this piece so we can have some piece of mind when loading things pver the tailgate.

No different than the 2nd gen. Only saving grace on 3rd gen is the actual tailgate is much thicker.

Put me down for the skin w/ribbing and cap. After taking it apart and as much as we use the tailgate, I don't see this holding up very long at all.

Defiantly interested in both possibly, does the cab sit flush just like the oem one cause i put a Bakflip tonneau cover on my truck and just wondering how the tailgate will seal! Also is the skin the same thickness as the oem plastic skin?

The actual weakness in the 2nd gen tail gates was the channel closest to the hinge, you can see it's much beefier now.

Here's a pic of the 2nd gen tail gate.

It would sit at the same as the plastic stuff for this exact reason.

Need someone with a third gen willing to come by and let us measure one up. First person to do so gets it, fo free! They won't be able to take it that day, but once I was 100% done I could ship it to them.

Depends on what you want. Recovery bar will take 4-5 hours, tailgate skin and cap 2-3 hours.
