So the issue that keep being brought up it that there are no bends on your plate reinforcement. Then the above picture was posted to show how the bends add strength.
Using the picture as an example, starting with the flat piece of paper to represent the stock tailgate plastic. Putting that can on there will cause the paper to fail. But, adding bends to the paper, and now it can support the weight of the can without failing.

What I was inquiring about is that wouldn't adding a stronger material also help stop the tailgate from flexing. Going back to the above picture, we see that the bends help with weight support. It seems to me though, that if we replace the piece of paper (which represents the weak stock plastic) with a piece of stronger material, (like your metal plate), wouldn't that also now be able to support the weight of the can without failing.

This is what I've been trying to prove the entire time. I know bends add strength, I design heavy formed sheet metal industrial equipment for a living. With that said, a piece of metal is substantially stronger than the plastic piece. I could make it thicker than the 14 ga steel it's made from now but it'll be too heavy. I have it on my truck now and I noticed a substantial weight difference. It's no heavy than a tailgate on a full size truck but still noticeable. I dropped the tailgate and climbed up on it, jumped up and down hard as I could and nothing happened. Took off the part to check the structure of the tailgate and it was fine. I weigh 260 lbs so I'd imagine I was exerting a good amount of force on it.

I like just the flat piece and if you really wanted to, you can modify the backside of the oem plastic piece to fit over my product. Hope this helps.

Haha, touché. Been selling the skins like hot cakes so I don't think the bends are holding me back that much. Already almost sold out of my stock and just started making more. Same with the locking doors.
