Mod Projects you’ve failed at...

Recently installed some TC Bed Stiffeners, which I’m totally happy with...except for the bright gold colored heads of the provided grade 8 bolts.

Having half a can of Plasti-Dip left over from some other non-truck stuff, I came up with a (notso)-bright idea! I’ll use it to coat those bolt heads!

I spent almost an hour pain-stakingly masking off those bolt-heads for both sides.


Sprayed one coat, waited 5 minutes, and then sprayed another. Both sides. Waited another 5 minutes, and pulled the masking...along with most of the Plasti-dip.

I knew the second I pulled the first side masking, it was a dud. Should’ve thought it through a little better. Fortunately, not a big deal. I’ll still use the left over Plasti-Dip, but I’ll be spraying it in a paper cup and using an art brush to apply it.

Who else has some post-worthy dumbassery to share?

 

I sometimes seem to ignore bad reviews, and think I know better. Most times, it ends up just like yours did.

 

did you know Plastidip is available as a brush-on or dip in a can? i painted my whole pinch weld with two cans of it and no spray can issues. either way that stuff is nasty.

i recently badly sprained my clutch ankle and couldn't drive at all for over two weeks. had to do something, so i set up and installed this kit. PITA of course but it came out good!

 

Yes, quite aware. Just want to use up the spray can I already have.

 

Just use some black spray paint

Been there! Tried the Vinyl dash wrap (first the “die cut model specific”, which was garbage, then a traditional roll. Garbage again).

 

One thing I did mess up, tried using a black paint pen on the chrome around the center council. Not good at all. Now I have to get the black vinyl overlays to fix my hack job.

 

I’ve done something similar to this before , wife had the bright idea of just using black nail polish.

Had to admit she was right about something lol.

I tried building a blue seas fuse tray under the hood. It came out okay, but I had the wrong orientation initially and it threw everything off from there on out. Before and after uploaded

What really made it great was the pictures he took during the whole ordeal.

 

Same here. Bought that damn cover off Amazon a ripped it about the third or fourth stitch into the job. So pissed.

I also failed big time trying to tint the windows on a topper I got cheap. So many bubbles and problems. Gave up and sold the topper.

 

Not this vehicle, but I had just installed a rebuilt transmission in my race car. 15 minutes into a test drive something exploded inside the trans. No go anywhere, just grinding noises. Put another transmission in it and sold the entire hobby off. Wife was glad to finally see this money pit being driven off by someone else.

 

Attempted to develop 3rd gen anytime rear locker modification....

A good 100 man hours or so later, learned alot but results = 100% failure

I seldom fail but... sometimes what I think should be a two beer job turns into a 22 hour job finishing at 6am om Sunday.

 

It wasn’t a failure, you successfully found 50 ways it doesn’t work.
