I find that my desire is more to get out and away than just offroading in itself. And a stock truck can go a very long way toward that goal.

That's what I found, too. And if you like going out of cell range alone, reliability means a lot.

Indeed. To quote James May it gives me the fizz. My SS should be pretty stout too. Building a iron block 5.3 with forged internals, boost cam, worked heads, and a turbski for it right now. Getting ready to strip the interior to throw the cage in it. Hope to have it "finished" by spring.

It really does. So much testing goes into these trucks and all we see is the end product - we don't know why they are built the way they are. As such, it makes sense to modify them with care and be aware of what we're changing as well as the potential side effects.

Mine has been a slow mod. Tires/wheels were first, Icon Stage III is coming next. Sliders may follow...but that might be about it. I feel 'ya though, it's a rabbit hole for sure.

    Later.

It certainly is a rabbit hole and this place makes it a deeeeeeep hole. I made a build sheet months before I got my truck (thanks tacomaworld!), the list has changed (thanks tacomaworld!) but it really helps me decide if I NEED it or WANT it. I have used it to talk myself out of several purchases thus far- most recently it was an OME TAK-16 lift. I want the truck to have a lift, but I don't need it for what I have going until the snow melts. Even after the snow melts, the truck did great this year with no lift, so will I need then?

I have a similarly embarrassing (but much more expensive) build sheet for the Cessna 180/185 I want to own some day....

It's definitely a rabbit hole, I'm hopefully purchasing a 2020 TRD OR this weekend. But even before I have the truck I've already got a new grill, rock sliders, wheels/tires, seat covers, and fog lights sitting in my shed. My GFC camper should be done in December, that will be my last mod for a few years. I'll look into suspension and lifts after my initial warranty is expired.

    Lol, who am I kidding!

nothing wrong with a little something to scratch the itch!

    pics!

    agreed there smart man

    Rabbit hole gonna get you

    thanks Tacomaworld!

    ditto.

title in hand is the best mod.

I could have paid off the remaining balance on my truck, but I chose to spend it on a bunch of shit that looks cool at the mall overland meet and greet.

Believe me, there is no amount of $ I couldn't spend on my truck. It's just a way to moderate the spending. If all goes well you have a chunk of change saved up by the time part x or y goes out, making it easier on your mind.

Same and agreed. Just return from a trip to the backcountry in Southern UT and the truck performed fantastic. The only mods I have done are for insurance (aluminum skids, sliders, better tires). A fully stock Tacoma would have done just fine.

Just saw your post and thought it was an interesting inquiry. I bought a truck because it represents who I am as an individual. And thus, modding comes in because I want a badass looking rig. I do however live in the northeast (Woburn, MA), to be exact, and there are not many trails this way. Other than Copicut, which is fun. I hate to be out there and something breaks, something that if I did change/upgrade to, it would not have. Its an expensive hobby. Right now, focusing on my job and promotions/making more money and then mods will come after. The fab companies will still be there, they aren't going out of business. Anyhow, here's a before and after. Haven't changed much, but I am in love.5DDFDBB9-7C7F-4E6B-B61A-93E040E536BD.jpgIMG_1143.jpg
    Mods so far:
CBI overland rack with thule box (with miscellaneous camping gear and a recovery strap)
    Winjet LED tails
OEM Massive 8K LED projector heads
    KO2 tires (265/75/R16)

And an incidental mod that is actually worked out pretty well for the time being and looks kinda sweet....(relocation of the license plate)IMG_1313.jpg

Check me out on the gram: Natl_Parks_Taco

Thanks again for the post. I appreciate it.

    Keep truckin'

Had been changing vehicles every 2 years, including wranglers, GCs, C6s, with a raptor and g35 worked in for good measure. Pleasantly surprised to find a manual taco is the most well-rounded and fun vehicle i’ve ever owned. So i decided to throw some bones its way to fill the few gaps that yota didn't fill and to keep it fresh when another sexy vehicle tries to lure me away.

100% leather seats to give it that good good baseball mit stink

Bigger radio knobs for my sausage fingers

    Raceng shifter knob for weight

Better speakers for my Rush and Halen

Better rubber for wet traction and fireroad grips

Better hoops to drop some weight and get some bronze against the black paint

Debadged to get the crap off and rebadged with a simple 4x4 sticker

Sliders with kickout and grippy powdercoat for steps, parking lot ding protector, and offroad protection

Skids for aero, i mean protection

My mod plans went in the opposite direction. I had plans of full Al. skids & sliders, a GFC setup and installing my TRD 'bead-look' rims asap.

Current plan: Possibly install front Al. skid at some point, keeping the Softopper in place of a GFC, and selling my never-installed TRD rims/sensors.

My #1 suggestion BEFORE modifying: Pay off your vehicle! Your financial institution will hate you however:)
