There are several awesome layouts in California.

This one is in the SF Bay Area and has 10k sf with HO, N, and O, and the HO models the SP and WP routes from the Bay Area across California and over Donner Summit.
    http://www.gsmrm.org/index.shtml

If you are ever in San Diego, don't miss another awesome place In Balboa Park with several different scales. The HO models the Tehachapi pass with the famous loop and also the San Diego & Arizona Eastern, with incredible trestels, etc. Somene on TW has actually documented a 4wd adventures along the former route.

And because I have zero space at my house, I am thinking of joining this Sacramento club, which also models the Bay Area to Donner routes for SP and WP. Their site is not too impressive in terms of eye candy, but they are pretty hard core.

This video gives a great overview the 2-level layout, and right at the end they show their dispatch center...pretty impressive.

I remember seeing this in Model Railroader Magazine years ago. Floor to ceiling scenery is so awesome.

Do any of you guys with layouts hand lay track? I did some, and built switches on my old layout.

I use Atlas flex track and switches. What 's the scale of your layout? Do have any photos? I'd be interested in building switches, where do you get the parts? I get a lot of derailments with my Atlas switches. Maybe I'm trying to go to fast through the things.

Sorry, no pics, and the layout is gone. It was HO. I learned from Model Railroader magazine, and I used to belong to a club. Learned a lot about hand laying at the club.

Nice. Whish I had that much room. The long-term goal is to have something with big-enough curves to run my SD40T2, but that is not going to happen for a while. I really need to join a club. I've been thinking about doing a small switcher layout so I can at least run the SW1500s, SD35s, and GP40-2s at home.
(This is the Athearn pic of the SD40T2 loco I have).

I need to drag out the toys now. They have been in the tote for too long. My favorite loco in my arsenal: HO Atlas Alco RS-1 Annarbor 21 smooth runner! I will stick LED's in the buildings this time and post pics.[IMG]

I think the Atlas locos, especially master series, are among the best values. Super smooth runners, beautiful starts and low speed performance, blow most Athearns away. I just wish they put out more! I am always checking their site for new releases now.
I've got two SD35s (SP) and three GP40-2s (2 SP, 1 WP). This is in addition to the Athearn SD40T2 and two Athearn SW1500s.

And I still basically have nowhere to run the damn things. Gotta join that club soon. But I dont' have time, either. :goingcrazy: But I figured out that these days, you just have to buy them when you see them because of the limited runs. If Atlas does an SD9 in SP (or even undecorated), I will buy three right away.

I sure loved those SD 40T2 tunnel motors that Southern Pacific and The Rio Grande used back in the day. I am a BNSF fan and was and still wanting to make-up and layout that runs along the walls and above the doors.
