Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
Have the same problem with the cover I bought - I'll be taking my Dremel to the plastic cover on the bumper to provide the needed clearance.

I’ve made a few changes. I haven’t modded much and have sold every “mistake”

hardcover - limited storage space too much. Sold
Bestop soft topper - not secure, noisy meh - returned
ARE optioned out Hard shell - should have done first (should have not bought yak8ma aero bars since I just ordered racks front and rear from Martin off-road.
Aluminum- iboards okay but brackets are cheap steel - sold
Nfab steps - good for now, will likely sell when my kids are a bit bigger

I wish I got sliders sooner. What it is gonna cost me to fix the the damage would have easily paid for the sliders to prevent it.

Front LED light bar. Love the thing and was hoping to use it often. Maybe used it twice in the two years I’ve had it.

I think CA peaked sometime in the early 90's and has been in a downward spiral ever since. I always think about moving back to Chico or Redding CA, but every time I visit i'm appalled about how bad it has become. The panhandlers and homeless are now everywhere

CB/light mount that goes out the back of the tailgate. Significant damage to the area over the course of a year.

Moved it to the front and much happier.

If I could go back and do it again, knowing what I know now, I'd probably buy an SR5 Tundra for a little more than my TRDOR Taco. I was in an apartment at the time and now a home and property owner. Once in a while, I have to test the Taco's towing and hauling abilities. Not often enough to financially justify a Tundra at this point, but often enough to emotionally justify it.

I have bought and sold 2 mods for my 16. A softopper and rock rails. The softopper was sold when I got a bed rack and RTT. I sold the rock rails when my focus shifted from off-road ability to longevity. My concern was trapping dirt and moisture between the rail and frame. I went on the most difficult trail I care to drive after getting them and never came close to touching down, so I sold them.

I think every pickup should have a good winch on it. I took my Warn off my 2006 and immediately got a hidden mount for my 16.

I also could've lived with the stock tires for a while longer.

If I were to start over, my priority list would be, in order-
Woolwax application, winch, regear. Having burnt a lot of money on things with wheels, I think it's best to drive something stock for a while and really figure out what exactly you need to change about it.

Every manufacturer has their gremlins. Frame rust is a way of life here in the rust belt. Toyota is the only manufacturer that I'm aware of that even addresses this as a problem. Products like Fluid Film will greatly help and they are taking steps to fix the issue by offering their own frame coating and replacing the frames if they're too bad. Although the 2017 models are included, I have yet to hear about one that was bad, let alone bad enough to need replacing. One of the main reasons I traded in my GMC was the amount of frame rust it was starting to show after 4 years here in MI.

Tbh, my OME leaf pack. Not for the common issues that everyone seems to have ie; squeaking, 2nd leaf digging into schackle.

But because it’s just a little too stiff in the rear for my taste.

My options when buying were deavers or OME, but being in Hawaii, my local dealers could get OME free shipping and Deavers were only sourced online and included some pretty steep costs to ship in.

I added another leaf on my 04, due to having a canopy, and towing an 18ft boat frequently.
You might try dropping the rear tire pressure?

rlmoody, seriously, you need to start doing fluid film treatments. Get a cheap wagner electric sprayer, a gallon of the fluid film from wherever, go to town on the underside. I have a 17, and zero rust anywhere on my truck. I'm only 1 state away.

Also, I recommend getting some of the aerosol cans of fluid film too, as they are a little easier to get into the tight areas, than the wagner will be.

Also, starting off with cheaper seat covers was a total waste. They didn't last very long at all. Clazzio for the win. Add seat heaters to the clazzio's, this thing is sooooo much better now.

Yeah it sucks living in the rust belt. If you look in the regional forums for Ohio Im sure there are a few people who do the woolwax/fluid film application before the winter comes around. Usually the person applying it charges $50 to apply it to all of the underside of the vehicle (obviously minus brakes and exhaust). Once applied you can not power wash the frame till after the winter or it will remove the application. Guys on here have been doing it for years and their frames still looks new. I just did my first application this past November with Woolwax from a local forum member.

Solid case for purpose build out. A lot of people on here will say sliders first. I am glad I didn't follow that advice when I started out. I have used my winch more often than I have ever even come close to scrubbing my side steps. My front bumper has been more useful than sliders would have been for me. Obviously though, that's my situation and not others.

Woolwax is thicker so it tolerates the spray much better than Fluid Film. A second application as the spring thaw starts is also good for the high spray areas though.
