Anyone local to LA, California, upgraded? Would like a ride along. On 37s now on my FJ and I'd like to see if a Tundra rack will do the trick for me.. I believe the OE FJ rack is a bit beefier than the Taco rack already. I'd like something to move the 37s a bit easier.

Exhaust dumped before the axle / no muffler. Phram fresh air cabin filter. K&N replacement filter, After market stereo, Grillcraft grill, custom fabled roof rack with 7" HID's, PRP race seats.
Can I ask what length these are being cut down to? Obviously the length of a oem tacoma rack, but if somebody has the exact number I’m interested in attempting this myself.

Good news, there is room in 3rd gens!

I'll be sharing install steps later when all bolted back on :sawzall::welder:

It's much more labor intensive including lifting engine

Just curios what inner/outers everyone using here?

Temporary using stock Tacoma ones, but the tundra boots slightly bigger so had to come up with this

PS living in rust belt, so must be durable BJ based on.

    Okay,

I finally have time to share install on a 3rd gen! Not easy to be one of the first, but it's done and drives great, still have to take care and install bigger PS cooler and different tie rods (anyone here to help?!)

In 2 years of ownership I already had to change Tacoma rack 2 times, so this was an obvious choice when the third time was coming up! :sawzall::welder:

    Here what was done:

    1. jack up truck (in my case put it on a nice lift and remove tires)
    2. Remove oil filter and unbolt all lines that are mounted in that area.
    3. Unbolt engine mounts and lift engine slightly up to allow old steering rack to be pulled out and new one to get in.
    4. Remove intermediate steering shaft and old steering rack. Say goodbye to this POS :brianr:

    8ED75435-A186-4DE1-9859-476CBAA63DB3.jpg
    4. Cut out old barrels with plasma and do not fill those holes!
    A7DA64D7-3146-45D6-9B63-4FE8334B5FB3.jpg
    5. Install new rack in and measure where barrels plan on going. You can use hole saw and make larger openings. Again, do not plate crossmember at the top.
    C7FE5706-16A8-46EF-BECD-7624C62F8788.jpg

    6. After you locate and cut out where new barrels going to be weld them from the bottom and give your best!
    D37C86E6-3642-427D-993D-1C7EED5D066B.jpg
The reason why you only can do so is the rack must recess inside of the crossmember as it's too big to sit flat on the cross member like it is on the 2nd gen. I believe they made crossmember slightly taller on a newer trucks as the barrels that I was sent were shorter to fit, not a problem in this case.

    7. Bolt it all back together, put tundra boots on and make wider inner tie rods to mount boot on (attached image below)

    6F38066E-FD54-4FC2-BC51-13A5C248F880.jpg

    8. Shorten intermediate steering shaft by approximately 1.5" and weld it back together. I used bearing and then casted it after welding with motor oil... lots of fire!!!

    7774204E-D2CB-4C88-9D8B-549A17C4D668.jpg

    9. Assemble everything and fill with fluid. Start engine and enjoy it!

Like everyone mentions here turning radius is less and steering stopper doesn't reach anymore, which results in the rack going far in and potentially blowing a seal (story for next time :anonymous:)
so the internal steering stoppers were created and installed see picture below (large washers where inners are).

    484B46F9-4540-42EF-8B2C-AE62B2F0A57B.jpg

I like how it steers now and can proceed to 37s :burnrubber:

bonus, did shock relocation at the same time:cookiemonster:

How thick is that washer you used for the internal spacer?
