If new tires are needed choosing a set with low rolling resistance would be cost nuetral...

I do believe nearly everyone who purchased the v6 manual instead of the auto has felt the mpg buttpain. The inverse is true for the 4 cyl folks.

Trucks with my tranny with the mileage capabilities it's shown are ...rare.

Tragically it is all on Toyota for choosing a terrible OD gear ratio for the 6-speed. They could have made the stick better than the auto with the right gear choice. I'm usually not a conspiracy fan but in this case I think Toyota sees more profit not selling sticks in the US.

Your doing pretty good with your combo though.

Careful what you choose, I made the mistake of buying Michelin's green-x low rolling resistance marketing on their Hydro-Edge series and find them to be a lot worse than the oem Firestones. I get minimum 2mpg less with the Michelins. Worse yet they are 90K tires so I'm stuck with them for way to goddamned long. :frusty:

Lame sauce! Is there any standard rating system on rolling resistance? How do you know if you are getting a good tire or not?

You could install a lowing kit from Tundraracing.com. That would be a mod that would increase mpg. Looks good too!

Tabbed browsing sure is awesome isnt it

First time hint: when you plug it into the OBD2 port it'll start searching for the ECU's protocol; you have about 10-15 seconds after that to turn the key to the ON position or it'll miss it, and you'll have to turn key off, unplug, and start over.

That one made me upset for a while until I figured out what was going on

I guess the EM1 is different.
I plugged in with the key in my lap and watched it for a good 3 minutes waiting for it to display the Canbus information.
    Just did:

    ****** SCANNING *****

With the stars narrowing and widening.

Finally started the engine and it immediately reported 11-bit.

It says that the fuel level sensor is not found... is this normal and it only goes by the injector data?

    Lucky bugger. Mine is finicky!

That's normal. Actually it's by MAF and not injectors. Even if it could see fuel level it wouldn't be accurate anyways (the only thing it would really use it for is auto tank fill).

Holy balls they want $200 for my UG! Guess it's been made obsolete.

Now, if I unplug this thing, it is going to lose or reset data?
I was planning to install it this weekend, but needed the 40 numbers from the self test for the rebate, so right now it's plugged in, cord draped over the steering column and it's resting in the cubby under the AC controls.

I got 20.5 mpg over the last 300 or so miles . This prior tank was filled with 93. I drove the truck how I wanted...when hitting a hill I got harder on the gas to get a downshift. Slow moving traffic??..passed 'em. That kind of thing. This was my best mileage.

This week I'm using 93 again, and trying the use the Prius glide foot technique as much as possible...and also get back into reading ahead and coasting as much as possible.

One doesn't need an ultragauge to monitor realtime mileage... if you can imagine a horizonatal bargraph that is at 100% efficiency when your coasting at a speed above 20mph with your foot off the gas, 50% efficiency with your foot about 1/8 of the pedal's travel, 25% with your pedal between 1/4 to 1/2 of travel, and 0% when its any further than that, then you have a pretty good visual on how those monitoring devices work. Basically if your foot is depressed, your pulling your mileage way down! If your coasting with your foot off the pedal, or gently gliding it, your boosting your mileage!

He's saying the stick is better mpg with the 2.7l vs the automatic. EPA says so and that seems to be correct, even thought the automatic has a slight advantage with the OD gear the 4spd automatic must not be as efficient.

Mine doesn't. It saves everything, including gauge positions, calibrations, and alarm settings. Once I moved it from my Honda to a Toyota 1MZ to do some code checking and when I put it back, lo and behold, my averages were trashed, but everything else was intact.

If you were comparing with someone who knows how to drive stick for mpg, yeah I bet it is. Also anything in town sucks when it comes to autos (fluid pump drag, torque converter drag at stoplights, etc).

Damnit, people have been telling me the auto is just as good in the 05-current for the 2.7L. I sure do hate pumping a clutch in town...

I seriously doubt it's as big a difference mileage-wise as between the V6s. Maybe none of the stick shift driver doesn't know what DWL is. If ya hate pumping the clutch, get the auto. It's a 4 speed and kinda slow compared to the 5 speed manual but it gets the job done. Actually EPA mileage on the auto is 1 mpg higher than the manual (I checked reg cab 4x4) for what it's worth.

I just always seem to default to the stick shift no matter what so I may be a little biased.
