This post is in no means bashing anyone who modifies their Tacoma to their liking, but a true reminder of the perceived value of a potential buyer.

In a perfect world these modifications would hold value and actually increase the resale of the truck, but alas, not so.

I’ve seen this particular truck start off near $40k, and now down to $32k. Who knows what the true purchase price will be.

By no means am I bashing this individual on his choice on his mods, as they are tasteful and wouldn’t mind some of these myself, but reality is, they seem to hurt the vehicle resale value.

    Mod example:

I have thought this same thing since I have been a tacoma owner. I feel like you could make more $$ if you sell the mods separately and make the truck as stock as possible. I have tried to get people to let go camper shells/racks and they straight out refuse to sell by themselves.

Yea man. It’s such a bummer, but that’s the real world market for you. He should part out. Best way to get some money back.

this is why I've kept all stock suspension and haven't done any cutting. Yes I have lockers, but before selling I'll swap back out to stock 3rd members and sell as close to stock as it can get.

Tasteful mods, but always keep the stock parts for this exact reason.

Absolutely. I went to a local Mazda dealer, and they happened to have a white 2016 DCSB 4x4 with low miles, but hadn’t sold in a while, and I had looked in the bed, and there were huge square pieces missing near the bed rail, and inside where a bed rack had been mounted. The dealer wanted $34k, but people are probably thrown off by that, and who knows what else.

I keep my stock stuff for this reason. One issue I think some people miss in these cases is that if you have to finance to buy it no bank is going to lend that high over the wholesale value. You have to have the cash to cover the overvaluation. Makes it hard to find a customer .

Yea, I didn’t think about that one... that’s possibly why people who mod, have a hard time finding a buyer because they only allow so much % financing. I’ve seen as high as 120% of the value of a vehicle, but it has to meet certain criteria.

Absolutely. That’s some nice info you got there. I was just going to post this info about what a local credit union will finance... here’s the rates and % they will finance.

I have many many dollars in mods on my trucks, and I assure you I know I won't get a quarter of it back on the resale. BUT youwill definitely make more parting the big stuff out then selling the truck.

Thankfully, I have no plans on selling mine for quite some time.

I know a dealer gives you market value that they determine somehow? They do not give you one penny for anything extra and most in the past have told me to remove whatever extra that I installed such as an expensive bed cover if I want them as there not giving me anything for them. As for this Tacoma, everything I’m doing is for me and I’m hoping to keep it long term. It’s paid for and as long as it’s dependable I’m keeping it.

The guy should at least spend $100 and "rebadge" his truck. It is a TRDPro and without the markings, it is just another Tacoma. I am always skeptical of people making big dollar claims into their upgrades.

Lol I was moreover testing waters because I am lazy af to part out. Fortunately, I still have all stock components so there's no issue. Only thing I am missing is the beer can skid plate.
