Using a CB is not the problem. It's the other trucks that don't have a CB. I'm usually the only one with a CB until Mike shows up on the second day. Hopefully if I make it this trip I'll have a race radio.

The past two times I went I didn't have any comms with anyone the first day and I did just fine. You just need to know the limits of your truck and try not to keep up with others if your truck isn't capable. The alst thing you want to do is break down out there and not have comms with anyone. It's pretty hard to get lost since everyone is going in the same direction. Once the faster guys get ahead they'll eventually stop and wait for others to catch up.

As we get closer to the date you'll have any idea of who has what type of communications.

you can, but a lot of that terrain is surrounded by mountains, and even at 10 miles, you may not find anyone on the other end to talk to...

aside from Johnnie, the other regulars who wheel in the desert all have race radios... i am the only one running both radios, but the race radio will fry the CB if use it with the CB on, so the CB gets turned off once we wheel...

whenever i had to relay info to Johnnie and another truck that had CB only, i had to turn off the race radio, turn on the CB, transmit, then turn off the CB and turn the race radio back on...

pain in the ass, so after a while, i just turned off the CB altogether...

Good lookin' out, Mike. :D Plus Mike probably won't show up on the first day so you can't rely on him having his CB. :p

hahah... hey, you know that run as well as the rest of us... you don't need communications... plus i always end up behind you in the caravan, so you would never get left behind...

as for first day, yah, i may go to Vegas instead and meet you guys halfway... hahahahah

    Mike,

Where is the spare carrier bearing located at? I'm trying to look it up so I can order the right part.

I'm still going. Lets go have some fun.

Mike, you mentioned a while back where to go get a race radio from. Do you still have the place where I can buy one?

You can go to the Ham Radio Outlet in Anaheim and get everything you need. Most guys around here use the Icom V8000 which sells for about $230. I have the Larsen NMO-150-BK which comes packaged with the coax and NMO mount for $55. There are a few cheaper radios you can purchase too.

it's not that pink zebra pattern one you used last time is it?

if so, i need to make sure to bring my matching sleeping bag and Jonas Brothers pillow...
