I've ran the Mojave about 8 times. You need a permit for 7 or more trucks or 15 or more people as previously stated. It takes a few weeks to process once you pay and apply. Yes, I've been pulled over at night by the rangers. Personally I wouldn't let anyone go without aux lights, at least 2 halogens. It's pitch black out there regardless of the moon. The roads are always changing and washouts, kickers and potholes come out of nowhere. If someone doesn't see them they'll damage their truck and that can delay the trip for everyone. Plus, ain't no tow truck gonna come get you way out there. Same thing goes for a ham radio. If you can't relay info at night it can get dangerous. Not trying to burst bubbles, just passing on my knowledge.

Pro Bro. I just called the Barstow, BLM. The dude is really chill. I'm in agreement with Johnny. I need you to Give me as much info as possible. Number of trucks, number of people, camping, all that stuff, and the best possible route. I guess these numbers for the permit play a role in it being free or not. Hit me up. Call, text or pm

You need to contact the NPS, not BLM. Danette(sp?) is the person you need to speak with. The application will ask for your route, several possible camping spots, number of trucks, people, etc. Once you submit the application they will review it and hopefully approve it. When they approve it they mail it to you, you sign it then mail it back, then you wait for them to mail the final approved application with all signatures.

word... and have everyone pitch in for the cost of the permit...

x2 on using HAM radio... CB radio can get limiting out there if anyone gets left behind in the dark... i used to run both CB and Ham on my truck and mostly used CB to listen to truckers on the hwy... offroad in the desert, i don't think i ever picked up anyone else out there... in the event of an emergency in the middle of nowhere with no cell service, you are more likely to reach out to a local Ham operator sitting in his cabin than with CB

I was just looking at the boundaries of the mojave national preserve. It doesn't start until just a bit east of Rasor road. Our planned route almost ends at that point. I guess if we forward the gps track screenshot I posted and say the we will be exiting to the 15 along Rasor road a permit may not be needed.

Well the list is as 17 plus some people who arent listed. Im guessing only about 15-20 will show up at most. Half will probably have passengers. So id say 30 people. Hard to know for sure exact numbers. Tom posted up the route but idk the details of it. Ill try to get more details from Airdog on the route. Camping is probably a no go. A few of us might stay the night but if so itll probably be less than 7 so no permit for that. So we can say no camping. Event will last from around 7pm to 3am at most! Should be everything we need

Ahh that would be sweet! Even if we only go 1-2 miles into their territory I highly doubt we would need a permit for that. I guess we can research a bit further and get this squared away. Thanks for helping Tom

Here's the pic from a previous post of our expected track. We will be entering the Mojave river at the point just below the 15 furthest left on the map. You can see that it makes a quick turn to the south where we go thru a gate along the fenceline there.

Looks like you're entering the dirt at Harvard road. From Harvard road to Afton canyon can be extremely soft sand. Make sure you guys have a few 4wd truck with you. We've had many truck get stuck through there. Also, going through and after Afton Canyon can be very soft too.

Agreed. I've ran thru there several times in the last year and it was soft but not any probelm for my 2WD though we never stopped until we got to the first bridge you go under just before the first water crossing and that is hard pack dirt at that point. It will be interesting to see what all the thunderstorms in the last few weeks have done to the riverbed.
I think it will be important to point out to the peeps going that unless you are 4wd pay attention too where you are stopping. There are plenty of places to pull over that are not soft sand. Normally out on the edges of the riverbed.

There should only be 2 times where a stop will be needed running thru the riverbed. Once where the fence line going across the riverbed forces you to the left. There you will pass under the train tracks onto a graded dirt road. This will allow the slower truck to catch up and all of us be together for the first water crossing.

The second stop will be after the we cross under the last railroad bridge and you are leaving the narrow canyon area into the open desert.

Thanks. This is actually a GPS track of the last run I did out there. It was myself and a couple of Solo motorsports trucks. We just did a day trip fun run from barstow to soda lake and back. GPS track shows it took us about 4 hours round trip but that included a couple of stops plus a lunch break.

If anyone is interested in the .gpx or .kml files of this track i'll post the files up here for download.
