Georgia that's a long ways away:wave:.Lots of good stuff between Butte and Missoula. Cool mining ghost towns, Philipsburg, Gold Creek, Garnett for example. Anaconda , George town lake, Pintler loop area has some nice camping, trails, lakes. South by Wisdom /Wise River in the Big hole valley is a really cool area also that you could loop up to Missoula from Butte. Lots to explore.

most of my suggestions are just forest service roads but they have great scenery and lots of camping anyone fishing...
    Around Butte....
Just south of town is the Highlands. Ltd of roads to explore back there. Take Harrison Ave south, turn onto Hwy 2 to Roosevelt Drive. Or continue up Hwy 2 until you see Fish Crk Rd. Both roads will connect and there's also an outlet near Feely interchange on I15
North of Butte take the Bernice exit off I15 and head west on the dirt road. Tone of roads back here. You can eventually pop out in Deer Lodge MT.
Around Missoula...lots of trails near Garnet ghost town. take Hwy 200 at Bonner and watch for the Garnet sign on the right. The roads either dead end, lead to Garnet or connect with I15 near Beavertail State Park.
In Missoula just past the Wal Mart on Brooks is Upper Miller Crk Rd. You have to get thru a subdivision first but will eventually find a network of roads that will connect back to Clinton, MT
Head to Hamilton MT then continue south until you see a sign for Skalkaho Pass. You'll climb into the mountains and on/off pavement. After the Skalkaho you'll see a sign for Rock Crk. Follow that until you see a sign declaring it a memorial highway. There's a dirt road just before the sign. That's the main Rock Crk Rd, 77 miles if dirt and awesome fishing. Ends at I90.

Awesome suggestions. I grew up in Butte and though I have not been on those roads in years they were great the last time I was on them.

Does any of the "gang" ever camp at Delmoe outside of Butte?

I'm planning on using that as a meeting place for a couple of us.

Hey I almost take offence to that if it wasn't true. We did use to party there back in the day. ITs hit and miss now.

Red mountain has some pretty areas. Pipestone and Delmo are the close areas to Butte that highschoolers usually go camp at.

Last time we camped at delmoe it was fine, didn't run into any trash while we were there but you can pretty much camp anywhere in that area.

@Scott B. When are you headed this way?

 Howdy! What is your route to South Dakota? I live in Gillette, WY and would be happy to meet up if I am available. If nothing else we could grab some grub. As far as places to go... Weesa has already been there, done that. I doubt I know anywhere that she doesn't haha.
We're kind of a big deal
I fail to see the problem here...

I leave Friday after work, and will make it to Cedar Pass Campground in Badlands by Sunday night, the 18th. Thursday, the 22nd, I plan to see Devil's Tower and Custer's Memorial on the way to Billings. After a stop in Cabela's, be in Butte early afternoon on Friday the 23rd, meeting a couple of other people that evening at Delmoe Campground.

I have a list of things to see in SD between the 19th and 22nd - we shall see how many of those I get to.

From the 23rd to the 30th, I will be wandering around between Butte and Missoula (and the surrounding hills). I think on the 30th, we will head to Bannack, see the ghost town, and head south to Utah for our return trip.

Would be happy to meet up - not sure which way we are going after Devil's Tower. Which route is better - through Gillette or north up into Montana on 212?

That HWY 212 is BRUTAL. I recommend that you stay on 90 the entire way, zip up to Devil's Tower, and then come back down to 90. There is nothing to be seen across SD unless you are in the southern part of the state in the Black Hills. You will get to go through some of it if you stay on 90. You could hit up Wall Drug and Sturgis along the way.

I'd say that if you're going to be near Billings make the trip to Red Lodge and over Beartooth Pass, you won't regret it.

Near Missoula I'd check out Philipsburg and head down Rock Creek just as Lisa recommended. The fishing could be shit because of the 3.5" of rain they just got so might be a good opportunity with fewer people. If the creek drops boats (trailers) will be all over.

Otherwise, from Pburg head to Skalkaho highway and into Hamilton (a section is currently closed due to rain and soft shoulders but could be reopened in a few days).

Make sure the Beartooth is open first. They've opened and closed it a couple times this Spring due to winter weather.

When was the last time you were on Hwy 212? I was on it in April and other than the 14 miles that crosses Wyoming, which is under construction, its not bad. Much more scenic that I90.

There is virtually no construction on I90 from casper to billings and redlodge as of 3 days ago.

My thoughts too, I preferred ravelling that way on my way back from school in Iowa. Just don't spend your time in Broadus or the Crow agency.
