Hey everybody. Im looking for advice/suggestions for an upcoming trip. Starting on 8/5 my wife, two kiddos (1 & 3 y/o), and 8 y/o black lab are embarking on a 10 day trip around the western part of the state. We'll be pulling a 1959 Shasta camp trailer and are hoping for some fishing and hiking opportunities. While I understand it's ambitious, our trip has us leaving Missoula and ending in Trout Creek, passing through the following towns:

    Darby
    Wisdom
    Dillon
    Sheridan
    Ennis
    Townsend
    White Sulphur Springs
    Great Falls
    Choteau
    East Glacier
    Columbia Falls
    Eureka
    Yaak

Hoping for quirky/cool spots or advice for pulling a camper (we are tent camping people). Thanks in advance for your help!

Out camping ATM but when I get home and at a real computer I can give you plenty of suggestions for the trip - mainly the Wisdom, Dillon, Sheridan, Ennis, Townsend stretch!

I knew you wouldn't let me down! I love that stretch and it's really the first time I get to share it with the family. My brother and I spend five-ish days each year fishing the Big Hole, Beaverhead, and Ruby rivers.

I used to camp there but I am thinking it is still a good place to camp out. There used be be some decent trails off of there as well. However like I said I need to revisit some areas as it has been years since I have done any trails up that way. I hope you enjoy it! :-D

On this day (June 13th) in 1805, four days after forging ahead of the main body of the expedition, Meriwether Lewis was overjoyed to hear “the agreeable sound of a fall of water.” Soon after he “saw the spray arise above the plain like a column of smoke…. [It] began to make a roaring too tremendous to be mistaken for any cause short of the great falls of the Missouri.” By noon, Lewis had reached the falls, where he stared in awe at “a sublimely grand specticle [sic]… the grandest sight I had ever held.”

You still in Great Falls or heading south to White Sulpher. You can do some fishing in Belt creek between Monarch and Niehart. Also a short 30-45 min. hike up to a small waterfall about 2 miles south of Niehart.

I work Monday through Friday 8-5 and occasional Saturdays 8-noon. My off time right now is kind of chaotic with my parents in town visiting and staying with me. Sister will be here in about a week as well. Check your PM's

BTW if you see this truck around it is me.

Maybe the Boulder River Road north of Butte at the Bernice Exit off I15? busy on the weekends with locals but quiet during hte week.
or the Fleecer Mtn area SSW of town at hte Feely exit off I90. again, busy on the weekends but quiet during the week
both have a FS campground or plenty of dispersed camping spotst too.
you don't need to know bub!

Then I'll assume you know the general lay of the land...
Near Wisdom/Jackson check out the Miners lakes. Small campground up there and a few dispersed campsites. Pretty. Remote. Almost in ID.
Bannack is always worth a visit. They'll have folks dressed up in period clothes talking about what life was like in the mining days. Same for Virginia and Nevada Cities outside of Ennis. The "sheriff" is usually roaming around looking to jail any deliquent kids...
Lots of camping in the Wise River and Big Hole Valleys. Is ou do head up Wise River Coolidge Ghost Town is worth a visit too.
Around Ennis check out The Gravelly range south of town. Kinda steep and narrow so not trailer friendly but there is camping lower in the Centennial Valley South of hte Ruby Reservoir or up FS Rd 209 beyond the Lyons BRidge Fishing access and state hwy rest stop. BRing bug spray...lots
Outside of Sheridan is the Branham Lakes area. No fishing up there but it is beautiful nd peaceful. There is camping available lower in the valley if you don't want to tow the trailer all the way up. Its not a long drive but it is steep and narrow..
Ringing Rocks outside of Pipestone is a fun stop. Bring some ball peen hammers...
Around Townsend check out Indian Creek RD and Old Womans Grave Rd. Lots of camping back there. the Roads start/end off HWY 287 just north of Townsend north of the Missouri River and south of Townsend at hte Raderburg Frontage Rd. Lots of trails and camping back here. Old WOmans Grave is also the MT NG training grounds. If they're doing anything the area will be closed off. Otherwise there are several trails you can access. Just obey the signs for the areas closed due to possible live ordinance!

That's all I got for now. LEt me know if anything sounds interesting and I can get you more detail.

I've been trying to google some trails around. I was thinking some backroads near the mountains with good views. Are there any within an hour or 2 from great falls?

That's awesome. If you're going to be up there at Malmstrom for 6 years you might as well build some equity instead of renting!
