    Hello from down South

I have a buddy that will be moving to Billings after the first of the year. He is not having much luck finding housing.

Any help with good areas, any info on where "not" to live or anything that someone should know before heading up that way would be greatly appreciated.

    And...

Billings is hit or miss. Other then the typical south side stuff, we don’t really have any “specific” crime areas. It’s more spotty. Wife works at the sheriffs dept and when we were looking she tried checking the crime map but it’s not confined. Our housing is pretty high for what you would think it would cost. If he narrows it down, you (or him) can post areas and I (or we) can say if it’s an area to avoid or not. Moving outside town can save money, but it also depends where he moves to, if it’s worth it. Costs can quickly be offset by a long winter commute.

In general, the west end has a little less nonsense going on but as mentioned it’s “spotty”. Most of the apartment complexes have problem tenants mixed with good people. I’d suggest him look for a place that has secure and covered parking. Hail is a bitch and So are tweakers.

That’s not even that bad. Cousins house got the entire south side destroyed. Not sure why anyone in MT buys vinyl siding or fences.

I imagine Bozeman isn’t much different with the hail damage.

Hit or miss here. About 10 years ago we had the worst that I've seen. Lots of damage across town. I'm in Belgrade and the storm just skirted us. My coworkers and I were standing at the windows watching the black cloud move in. I had my keys in my hand and was ready to rush home and get my truck in the garage if it got too close. Golf ball sized stones in Bozeman, nothing out here in Belgrade.
And this past summer I was camping outside of White Sulpher. Rained like you wouldn't believe that night. Drove over the mountains towards Canyon Ferry the next day and noticed lots of branches and leaves in the road. Turns out Townsend saw golf ball sized hail from the same storm that rained on me at camp. Sure glad the hail was done by the time the storm crossed the mountains....dont think the RTT would have survived...

    Still in planning phase ...
May want to look in surrounding towns, if he does not mind commute, Roundup about 48 miles away is about a 45 minute drive ... furthest I would consider. But there are smaller towns nearby. Also ... have at least a carport, but better a garage. Storms, especially hail can really suck

I’m from Laurel which is 15 miles west on the interstate. When I was home for Thanksgiving there was quite a bit of homes for sale and are more reasonable than where I live right now. A Haus of Realty Sold my wife’s grandmas house and was really good. As far as places to avoid it seems like the Heights every couple years gets hailed on pretty bad. I’ve always thought that living in Huntley to the east of Billings would be awesome. If I move back to Billings I would probably live in Laurel or Lockwood (some people think it’s sketchy). If he’s looking for apartments on Central and Shiloh they created some really nice ones that have places to eat and other things below them. Hope this helps your friend.

Lockwood, like the rest of Billings has spotty spots that are sketchy. The true south side is the only “area” a whole I would avoid. I also know we avoided looking in Roundup when we moved back after retiring. Seems like the Musselshell floods every few years, also a decent history of fires.

Kinda surprised to hear how many are in Billings or near by.

@Cole_MT Where you planning on shooting that new rifle? Hats off to you if you plan to do it outside, better man then me.

I’m in far eastern Montana (Sidney area) probably go on some federal grasslands about 20 mins away in North Dakota. When I come to Billings my uncle has a membership to the Yellowstone Rifle Club out on Molt Road they have steel setup a good ways.

Ah got ya, thought you were in Billings. Good luck in with the weather then! I’ve spent enough time sucking up shitty weather, not much into it anymore.

What will he be doing as far as work? That would give us more insight on where he should look maybe.

Funny, I live in Columbus and I always thought that there was lots of housing in Billings and pretty cheap for that matter compared to where I am.

My girlfriend commuted from Columbus to Billings for work for a while. Wouldn't recommend that. It's only 35min commute but 45 miles and when the weather is bad it really really sucks.
