FWIW Ressler is running a tire sale til the end of May, buy 3 get 1 for $1. For BFG KO2s in 265/75/16 it's just over $800 for a set, mounted.

Hey guys, I don't want to fill the thread with a bunch of off topic bs, but I was wondering if I could PM some of you guys (or vise versa). I'll be moving to Butte for college in the next couple months and would like to talk to a few of you guys about the area considering I don't really know anyone up there. Just stuff like what neighborhoods to avoid when looking for a place, when to prep for snow season, and some other random questions. If you live or have lived in the area I'd appreciate any heads up and advise I can get.

I'm transferring from a community college here in CA, looking to finish up my mechanical engineering degree. With any luck it'll be 2 years including the summer in between. Right now I'm just looking around for places to stay. My two biggest questions regarding that would be, what streets/neighborhoods have a bad reputation? And also, do you guys get bad hail there? Here it's rare to get hail even the size of a pea, but the last thing I want is a totaled taco from baseball sized hail. I know MT is notorious for its cold and snow, but does it hail enough to make a garage/carport a necessity? I visited the area over summer and loved it there, I just want a little insight from those of you who have been there longer than a week :D

We can get some pretty wild storms in the summer - usually July and August - but damaging hail is rare. Maybe once a year somewhere in the state gets hit hard. Last year was Townsend about 50 miles NE of Butte. They got hit pretty hard. I was actually camping further East and got rained on - monsoon like rain - but no hail. Was driving over the mountains the next day and noticed all the little tree branches scattered on the ground. Had no idea why at the time. I lucked out. Pretty sure golf ball sized hail would have ripped the RTT to shreds!
If you want a garage you're going to want it for winter but rentals with garages in Butte are rare. Getting out to warm up the truck and scrape ice off the windows gets old fast! And it can get cold. If you don't have a block heater I would highly recommend getting one. And a good battery. And good tires. Lots of steep hills to drive in town. I had a front wheel drive Oldsmobile when I was at Tech and that thing was great getting up the hill every day...had to do about 35-40 at the bottom to get to the top at 5 but I made it every time!
As far as neighborhoods go...everything rental-wise West of Excelsior is decent, maybe pricy as the landlords know they can gouge the Tech students for rent and convenience. Excel to Montana is good with some spotty trashy areas. I personally would avoid everything Main to Grand...pretty run down in that area. South of Grand is good. If you're renting I would make sure to find out what the last utility bills were as it does get cold for a really long time and the older buildings in town are anything but energy efficient.

Anyone familiar with the Pryor Mountains area? Just wondering at what point it becomes passable? Was thinking 2308/Sykes Canyon or 1017/Crooked Creek on the FS map. I'm thinking the further south and east you get its fine since it becomes pretty dry just wasn't sure how the more north east portion gets.

Spent time out there a lot in the last few years.

It does dry out much faster than other places. However, right now up high is not dry yet. Late may will be.

Fair warning, when it's wet out there and muddy, it suuuucccckkkkssss. The lower area's have the high concentration of bentonite mud which is nasty slippery shit.

But all it all the roads there are all easy and fun. nothing out there isn't do able in a stock rig. The switch backs off the east side of Big Pryor can be sketch if you're not used to that sort of thing. But over all fun.

    Mud up high:

Still it's a cool spot when it's nice. June is the best time to go, the flowers are awesome up top.

The coolest part is the ice caves thought. Think there are about 13 or so out there. I've only been to 2 or 3. Want to go to more this year hopefully.

Thanks for the response, sounds like you are suggesting waiting about a month still? I was thinking about going 2 weekends from now.

In two weeks it'll be pretty dry. Might not be able to cross the top of Big Pryor but maybe East. Be some mud holes im sure here and there but still do able and fun.

I just finished up my 2nd full winter (plus summer in between) on a set of E-Rated Falken AT3W's. Lots of tread left.

I went form Cooper ST Maxx (which I loved) in 255's and went to Falken 285's. So it's hard to compare directly. I will say the Cooper's felt more steady on icy roads (which makes sense simply because they were not as wide). But the Falkens have worn much, much better.

LOL This whole thread is off topic.

I've lived in Montana over 14 years now. Don't spend much time in Butte. But I do know that Butte folks are, Butte folks. Much of Montana calls it "Butte America". It's a unique place. Evil Knievel was from Butte.

While you're there find a good pasty! (pronounced past-ee, not paste-ee). And if you don't wanna get stabbed avoid the drunken Irish bars when they open back up post COVID. lol

I ran Falkens on my last Tacoma. nothing bad to say about them overall, they were unstoppable in deep snow (that year we had record snowfall in the seattle area, i had about 12" on my driveway by the time it started melting), had great wet traction, good handling characteristics, and they didn't look all that bad either. My only issue was that the tread compound was pretty soft. by the time i sold that truck the tires were starting to chunk out, nothing major, but i'd imagine it would have kept going. A buddy of mine bought a 2000 F-250 from his uncle and it had Falkens on it, those tires were a mess, big chunks missing all over. I know that the SD Fords are way heavier than the tacomas, but the fact that we had the same issues makes me wonder if it's just an overall flaw with the rubber compound. For that reason i'm steering clear of them this time around. On the flip side however, A family friend who lives just outside of Bozeman is running a set of Falkens on her GMC Sierra HD and has no issues whatsoever. last time we spoke on the subject, she said that she plans to buy them again when the time comes.:notsure:

Think i'm going with the Generals in 285s, thinking i'll be getting around to ordering them within the next week.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I've got great tires that are also triple peak rated (for whatever that's worth), a brand new toyota battery, and I've been looking into oem block heaters. Do you guys stud your tires? Or maybe keep a studded winter set and a normal summer set?
Good to know, some places I was looking at were practically on the same block as bars. That was kind of off putting, but I'm still looking. I wish I knew to look out for pastys while I was in town.

depends. i've never run studded tires on anything i've owned - just always had good all season tires. but if youre not used to driving in the snow and ice or if youre a skier or something who wants to be heading out over the weekends regardless of weather then maybe it would be something to consider.

and you're gonna be hard pressed to find something not by a bar....Butte has lots of bars scattered all over town.

Also depends on where you have to drive regularly. If it's around town mostly. All terrain or all seasons will be fine.

Where I'm at those aren't good enough and I have to drive on back county roads 4-8 miles to get to work and plowing is spotty. So a good tire helps a lot vs a tire that just ok at everything.

For getting to school all terrains will be fine.
