Water levels are expected to rise but not burst the banks. Hopefully

Last I heard, they are saying North Loop of Yellowstone closed for the rest of the year. South loop to reopen Monday.
Hope everyone is safe and dry right now. I'm quarter mile from the Flathead in Kalispell. Keeping an eye on things but no real worries yet.

Hi all. @Snow Doctor was kind enough to direct me here. We live in Livingston. Been an interesting week here for sure. Will take a ride later to see if the river is coming up again.

@truchador , you should be fine near the Shields. If it wasn't blowing 60mph right now I would be checking it out with the flyrod today. It may actually be fishable.... kind of it is also one of the few spots not currently affected by closures.

I appreciate this update and any others you may have….especially as far as fishing goes lol
feel free to pm me any advice you might have for a family of fly fishers who are spending a week on the Shields…looks like a float day on the Yellowstone is out :(

also what is the general feeling as far as visitors and tourists being in the area while the flood damage is being dealt with? Any places to stay away from?

sorry to be a pain lol we’ve been planning this trip for years and still want to make it happen

@truchador keep checking in. I ended up mountain biking so never got to the Shields. Maybe today. Right now pretty much all of the national forests are closed. I suspect it will open soon.

I don't know why they didn't use us hikers as a resource and encouraged us to go in there with a questionnaire to help assess any damage. There is no way they have the staff to assess all that land.

We got some rain yesterday but the forecast for today has changed for the better. No additional flood waters from what I can see.

I've never been up there but it was on my list.
Guess I'll just wait til next year.

I'm kinda curious about the Boulder south of Big Timber. I've been up there during peak flow before and its a little scary. Seeing as how this year was a lot higher I'm wondering if some of the road maybe washed out up there

well I did that up to Blue lake last year. It was ROUGH. THe creek had burst into the road going up and it was pretty eaten away. Was nearing Locker required territory. Rest of it was fine. I don't think anyone in the clubs has made a run up there due to snow and now with the flooding, im not optimistic it's a road anymore.

i remember the pics you posted last year. crazy how much its eroded. no way it survived this year if the floods started that high up.

yeah it'll be bad. And it won't be a high priority to fix I'm sure give its basically all wilderness past that point anyways.

varies a lot right now. Some places aren't bad at all. Others are sloppy snowy messes. But I'll bet you'll be okay.

I'd definielty call. That area as of today is at 430% snow water equivalent for June. Which is high but this year is just high snow/water. So 400% could be 4'' for all I know for late June over there. But plenty of places around 7500-8000' are snow free for the most part. It's over 8500 that will still have snow.

Anyone been up in the Elkhorns recently? Have to be in Clancy for a memorial on Sunday afternoon and looking at taking the big adventure bikes and checking the area out. Might change our minds and haul the "dirt" bikes down and use them. Recommendations on places to see? Be down there Saturday night thru Wednesday morning. Thanks all!
