Assuming you have 4wd, it is pretty uncommon for CHP / Cal Trans to actually check if there are chains in you vehicle.

But, the reality is they can check. You are you are required to carry chains in your vehicle during winter condition when you go to the mountains and they can give you a ticket if you do not have them.

It all depends who's running the chain control inspection areas !!!!

It depends on how bad the conditions are, but if there is a checkpoint, expect to be flagged down and pulled over. its a great money maker

I was driving home from the southern Sierras back in Sept through the high desert area out near those mountains, and there was a wind storm with 50mph+ winds coming through. Had one sudden gust very nearly made me lose control of my truck going about 75mph down the 14 freeway. Pushed me abruptly halfway into the next lane, scared the shit out of me. Had a 2 handed death grip on the wheel after that.

I drove a motor home up the 395 last year in a storm. Some scary moments on that trip no doubt. Was a Freight Liner though so the thing weighs a shit ton.

Yeah our trucks are tall and light so they make for a bad time in the wind lol.

Then you know what I'm talking about.

How long are you in town for? I saw you got to do some trails over the past few weekends.

Maybe, I got sick on Friday and had to leave work early, and we were going to leave tomorrow at 11 p.m. to beat traffic. But if I'm not feeling good enough, no point in making everyone else at Thanksgiving sick...... Such is life.

Depending on which way you take (if you go), going up the 395 will be beautiful with the snow but with the incoming storms I would probably go up the 5 and cut across...as much as I hate the 5 going through central CA. I would bet traffic on the 395 with the storms will be awful, not to mention they might shut it down in sections.

This is very true. Driving for a living I see it all. I have had 5 incidents in the last 18 year. 2 were people passing on the shoulder. 2 were people cutting in front of me and they had no where to go and the last 1 was someone making a u turn on front of me. All youngsters under 24 years old. CA driver in good weather have a hard time driving safe.
