Sorry to dig up the noob radio topic again, but what's the most commonly-used type for group runs in SoCal?

I don't really have the time to figure out HAM and get a license these days. If I get a CB, is there a good chance others will have one too? If HAM is the way to go, I'll just wait until I'm able to dive into it.

Get a baofeng, majority of people around here run it. It’s Ham, just stick to the public channels

Don't really see many people that use CB anymore. Most everyone I've wheeled with has one of those cheap Baogeng HAM radios on public channels. Still supposed to get a license though, technically. Though you'd have to be one unlucky soul for the FCC to hunt you down and bust you for using a public channel on an offroad trip lol. Not saying it couldn't happen but...it won't happen.

Test is easy but I don't how they are doing them now with the cv19 stuff going on

What are "public" channels? I thought no transmission on HAM unless licensed.

Last time I checked a few weeks ago, tests were cancelled but maybe they have new protocols. Would be a good time to study right now.

I saw a post about online proctored tests be made available.

The handheld radios allow you to plug in many frequencies, including FRS channels which require no license. GMRS frequencies require a license that doesn’t involve a test. The HAM frequencies require a license that has a test.

Online would be perfect. Finally catching up to the times! I had no idea you could program FRS and GMRS on the handhelds. Thanks for the info. Will play around with my BF this week.

This is good info, thanks guys. Sounds like the Baofeng is a good do-it-all starter radio. Am I correct in that it can communicate on CB channels or FRS/GMRS frequencies, in addition to HAM?

Not CB, but it will do FRS, GMRS frequencies, as well as 2m and 70cm ham bands.

and at about $25 you dont really stand to lose much.
