No way for this weekend, it's going to be an absolute madhouse up there lol. New Years, 3 day weekend for most and fresh snowfall...it will be mayhem on the roads and on the trails I guarantee.

The following weekend is a definitely possibility for me though

I'll be curious to know how it is, which route are you taking?

I still have ptsd from attempting it last year but I think the lockdowns of 2020 had a lot to do with how many people were getting out on weekends in early 2021, hopefully its not quite so bad this year.

Super Bowl weekend is a great time to go out and hit the trails, when everyone's at home watching sportsball

that was the day my wife and I tried to go up into Big Bear with my father in law, New Years day 2018. But we made the mistake of taking the highway up and sat in bumper to bumper traffic for hours. I think my clutch leg grew 3 sizes that day. Going up via the trails might not be so bad.

the roads will just be packed with people trying to go skiing/snowboarding

@eon_blue and I went a couple years ago via Coxey on New Year’s Day, but the snow had been sitting for a few weeks.

Probably going to be a lot worse this year since the snow is still coming down

edit: put the wrong video, fixed

What's the easy "trail" route to get up to big bear nowadays? I typically just take HWY38 so taking a trail to big bear will be a first.

You're right I totally forgot about that one being on New Years Day. The one with my FIL was probably the year before that then.

What route did we take back down, the same one? I would just make sure to avoid any highway up there at all if going this weekend, take the trails up and down. Not to mention I think one highway into Big Bear is shut down right now due to a rock slide from last week

And yeah the snow up there this weekend will be much deeper

Coxey Rd takes you all the way up into Fawnskin from Apple Valley, it's an easy fire road. But it will be covered in snow right now. I've done it snow covered and it's not hard as long as you have 4wd, but you have to be wary of others on the trail that might not know what they're doing in the snow.

if anyone goes up tomorrow, post up and let us know how it was. I'm willing to bet that Saturday will be less crowded than Friday or Sunday. I also want to know what the trails are like.

this is the route I was probably to try to do this weekend. Hoping someone gets up there tomorrow and reports back how it went, so I have beta on the area.

They're expecting 2 to 3ft of snow out of this storm in the higher elevations >5000 to 6000ft! On top of what was already there. Please post pics. It'll be an adventure for sure.:popcorn:

I'll go up coxey, then wing it. I don't have chains so I'll ease into it.
