I checked the forum update for this today and it looks like this event this weekend is still good to go and they're expecting it to dry up.

Can anyone recommend the best alternative route into big bear? Coming from LA area and I'd like to avoid traffic as much as possible.

Looking @ going Thursday and it's showing chance of snow.

Nope, if I recall correctly, they closed the forests down so you can only access the mountain from the hwys. Also can't say I suggest trying other routes without knowing your setup and skillset. There was a lot of snow weeks ago that made the routes much more difficult. I can't imagine what it's like now.

Good thing you're going Thursday though. Less people will be on the mountain.

Yeah with that first big storm a month ago, Coxey Truck Trail up the mountain was a freaking mess of traffic and people stuck left and right. I hope they closed it down for awhile because I can't imagine how much more damage that trail would take from all that. Used to be an easy 2wd route in the summer but I bet it's going to be crazy rutted out later this year, hopefully that will keep more people away though lol.

It's kind of a double edged sword. We drive over miles of fire roads to find the good trails and I want to have access to them year around. That said, you can't detour people who are less prepared and probably shouldn't be there in the first place. The trails really take a beating from the storms and increased traffic so I understand why they close them.

I want my cake and eat it too. :angrygirl:

Makes sense. As far as set up and experience, 4x4 with 5100's, 33's, jba uca's, ome dakars, full skids.....etc.....etc. I'm reasonable experienced but will be solo for most trips up so nothing too sketchy.

    Couple things to post here:

Looks like Oceano dunes are still open after the threat of them closing in March. I am headed up there this weekend April 8th or 9th, haven't decided which day.

CaliYotas has a run on April 23rd to "Abandoned Railroad Bridge"

Many of the trails in a Southern California are closed down until June.

Separately, there's tundra group going off roading at Pismo Beach / Oceano dunes next weekend. I won't make this one, but wanted to share it here
