I'd like to do some camping around monument valley and looking for some primitive camping locations or any other advice/tips.

My google research has revealed numerous trailer parks and established campgrounds which I'd like to avoid.

    Thanks!

If you want to avoid campgrounds and the reservation in general, you may want to camp in the area immediately north of Mexican Hat. Plenty of areas around there, and you can explore Valley of the Gods and some other areas in addition to Monument Valley. I camped off a neat little road (244) past Goosenecks that parallels the San Juan. Camped back in a ways on a little creek and there was a petroglyph site along the way. Just depends on how much driving you want to do.

BLM 244 is also called John's Canyon Rd. and I can confirm that it's awesome. If you follow it all the way to the creek crossing, you'll see a beautiful camp under big cottonwoods. Amazing place.

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but this is one of my favorite place on earth. There is also good camping east of Valley of the Gods off roads that run north of Hwy 191 before Bluff. 226 rings a bell.

Have a kick ass trip. Let me know if you need more specifics.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info on this spot, just stayed there a few nights ago. We camped under the cottonwoods, and fell asleep to the sound of the creek running all night. I went exploring the next day about an hour past the petroglyph site, and could have went all day. Beautiful spot, I want to come back to.

This get me so stoked! Looks like you had this spot all to yourself. Did you continue down John's Canyon Rd. a little further? It gets, uh, a little gnarly. We got stuck in a really sketchy spot and only through the power of TRD did we make it out. Truck was stock back then. I want to go back and redeem myself.

There's a whole to explore in the Bluff general area, just gotta do some research.

I just got back from a 5 day Escalante trip... amazing.

MT stuff, RTT stuff, the usual.
How’s the road to the cottonwoods? Lifted 2WD friendly, or 4x4 only?
