Well gang I have a little problem.

The moon roof in my 2017 DCSB-OR is leaking. I first noticed the issue when I took my taco through a touch-less washer. The jets managed to blast water straight down into the cab, and onto the back of my neck. As the truck is still under warranty I took it to the dealership, where they determined the factory seal was deformed. The dealership ordered and replaced the seal with a new one, but it also leaked when I took it through the same car wash. I've never had a vehicle with a moon roof before so I don't know if it's normal for them to leak a little from the water jets. I am not sure if regular rain will cause the same leaking, I'm in New Mexico and rain isn't something we get on a super regular bases.

Any insight is appreciated, and thank you!

Moonroof are not supposed to leak any liquids. Return to dealership and have them figure it out.

It should NEVER leak. Keep taking it back til it gets fixed. My Porsche is 22 yrs old. In Hawaii, we get a lot of rain . Never a drop of water gets past the seals.

Actually, many times moonroofs do leak a little in a car wash situation. They are designed to handle a small amount of water bypassing the seal. There are drip rails and drains built into the system to channel that small amount of water out of the vehicle. All moonroofs I have owned have dripped a small amount at the corners (in a carwash), but that was always handled by the drip system and never a concern to me. However, what you are describing is definitely a seal failure. As the vehicle ages, maintenance of those drains is important.

The dealership adjusted where the moonroof sits in its rails, so it should sit better against the roof and make proper contact. Unfortunately this has not worked as today I found water again leaking in. As a matter of fact it was a lot more water than with the original seal. I don't know what to do. I called the dealership, but no one in the service department was available to schedule me another follow up. I will call again in the morning, but this is starting to worry me.

Stop taking it through that particular car wash, I would say.

I recommend upgrading to a TRD Pro. I've had no leaks at all. :anonymous:

At this point I would write to Toyota North America.
Log down everything from 1st time taking it dealer to last and if able to attach , send copies of service tickets. If can, take picture or video of the leak. That leak is not normal. My truck and car both have sunroofs and not a drop gets past the seals.
There is as lemon law which may apply .

I think the owners manual recommends against taking it through the high pressure car wash.

does it leak when you put a garden hose on it? to simulate a more natural environment? ( like not a pressurized stream of water shooting directly on the seal, but more like a typical rain storm )

    Okay gang, a quick update.

I have tested the seal with a more relaxed water stream. I took a glass of water and poured it over the roof. Unfortunately the results were the same. The seal still leaked a fair amount of water.

I have exhausted the dealership with the complaint. After three separate appointments, and speaking with the service manager I have been told there is nothing more they can do for me. The dealership has replaced the seal and re-positioned the glass twice. The service manager told me that he has referred the issue to Toyota, and in the next 2 to 3 weeks a TFS (Toyota Field Service) Representative would be coming into the area to inspect it.

Now get this! I have found two more defective seals around the driver and passenger door jambs. The seals have started to peel back away from the glue holding them in place. The dealership has ordered replacements and will replace them when they arrive. When I showed the service manager all he said was that, "the truck must have been assembled on a Friday." Granted I did laugh, but this is getting out of hand. This is the second Tacoma I've owned and unfortunately I'm rapidly losing my trust in the brand.

I'll try to post some pics sometime over the next day or two.

    Check your seals folks!

That sucks. But I’m sure Toyota will get it right. Especially with water issues due to potential problems with mold. Some people with leaky 3rd brake light ended up with new trucks because of that.

So they’ve just been screwing around with replacing small parts and then adjusting the seal? Sound to me like they should just replace the whole moonroof setup.

I’d start looking into lemon law for your state.

Leaking ass roof is a no-go.

I’m back at the dealership. At least it’s for a simple service this time, the truck is due for its 10k. I’m sorry I never got pics of the door seals up, life and work got in the way. The dealership is going to replace the door seals today.

As for the moonroof I’m still waiting for the TFS rep to make it back down to southern New Mexico to check it out. We have entered our monsoon season and the rain has really been coming through the moonroof a lot. To the point where the “drip tray” has been overflowing. The dealer rep has told me that Toyota will handle the issue from here on out, and that the dealership has been told to no longer touch the moonroof at all.

I guess I’ll start to look into lemon law stuff, but I really have no idea how any of that works. Any advice is, as always, appreciated.

You'll never get a lemon law for a roof leak. Only applies to safety issues.
I don't see how the channels and drain holes aren't catching it. Car wash streams hard at an angle.
If it doesn't leak in a storm I wouldn't sweat it. If it does than its an issue.

My moon roof does NOT leak on my '17 DCSB OR. This is NOT normal, contrary to previous posts.

This sounds like Toyota acknowledges and is owning the issue which is probably as good as it gets.

I've never had a moon roof leak. Even in 15 year old cars that are always parked outside.

Speaking of moon roofs, can you tell the Toyota rep they seriously need to add some headroom and or make the dang seats height adjustable? A 40k dollar vehicle and no power seats or height adjustable seats is a joke. I just bought a Tacoma and im trying so hard not to sell it due to limited head room. Yes I know...I should have test drove it more and I should have bought one without the moon roof. But I wanted leather and I had no choice. By the way im 6'4".

Good luck on the leaking issue though! So far I have not had any leaking.
