MW how many miles do you have on your truck? I bought mine with 73k and had to change out the clutch at 85k. I have the 03 4x4 v6 too. What did you end up doing for the rod assembly under the peddle?

It has 223k on it now. I bought it with 218k. I have no idea when the clutch was last replaced.

For the rod assembly I bought a Wagner master cylinder from rock auto. It was around $40.

Going to order one today. I'll install it when I get back from our Thanksgiving trip.

I appreciate the help from everyone.

I'm in the process now of ordering parts. One of the writeups said to replace the rear main seal as long as I'm in there.

I'm not sure what Rock Auto is calling that. In the "Manual Transmission" section they list "Input Shaft Seal", "Main Shaft Seal", and "Output Shaft Seal". Is it any one of those?

To clarify, the MT output shaft seal or the engine rear main seal? And to be sure if you're talking MT output shaft seal, you're talking the seal the goes on the output shaft that goes from the MT to the transfer case?

If it is then I'm going to guess that it would be called the "output shaft seal". No idea for sure as I haven't ordered from Rockauto. If you get one from Toyota, it is TGP part #90311-40007.

With a clutch job folks frequently replace the "engine rear main seal" not the transmission and it's a real good idea. I would stick with OEM for that.

Thanks, guys. I'll get it from Toyota. Sometimes standing in front of the parts guy explaining what you are doing is the best way.

the output shaft seal on the MT has a tendency of going out as well. I read about it in several places and ordered one just in case as I had a slight gear oil leak that seemed to be at the t-case/adapter joint. When I did the clutch I pulled the transfer case off the MT and found the adapter body was full of gear oil.

I wish I had known that it was common to do the engine rear main seal but hopefully it'll hold until next clutch job. vroom, vroom.

I'm returning here just to close the loop in case anyone searching for the same problem finds this thread.

I've finally replaced the clutch. The problem of shifting into first from a standstill is gone. It shifts into first like butter. I think there is still a slight hitch going from first to second, but not downshifting from third to second. It's slight, though, and the truck has a quarter of a million miles on it, so I'm going to give it a pass.

I did notice a new rattle near the shifters after completing the job. Then found that it was actually coming from the loose change. I suspect that rattle had always been there I had never noticed.

ALL seals have a tendency to go out or fail. However, if it's not leaking, i would leave it alone. if it was seeping, i can see, but if there was no evidence of leaks, leave it alone.
