I think it's a chopped access cab. It's also got the center consol of an access cab.

also looks like the back end of the bed is farther back than if it was a stock bed. so i hope they extended the frame farther back if it is.

once you do this kind of work the the truck, the factory tow/haul rating is irrelevant.

the warranty is shot anyway, and all the modifications were specifically made to haul more weight. and it looks like the leaf pack in the rear, is not stock.

C channel frame and what it can handle still is very relevant. only than that may not be is the leaf pack and the axel strength.

1987 Toyota motor home 22RE duel wheel full floating rear loaded weight 6,400# I drove it for thousands of miles. Putting two extra wheels on does not make it a one ton the full floating axles do. Yes a 4 will pull the weight it will be slow but it will get you there.

    Yep.

Bring your mowers, trimmer, blower, etc without towing a trailer. It's not going to have a huge payload, but should be adequate. The regular cabs are rated at 1500? pounds. The flatbed probably doesn't weigh that much, it could be aluminum. Upgrade the axle and springs from stock, and I don't see why it wouldn't handle 2000 pounds total added load from the stock curb weight. Lots of guys put campers on these trucks and it works out okay. As long as someone else (the truck upgrader) takes the liability off me by putting a new payload rating on the door jamb, I'd run it.

My boss has an 86 1ton with the 22re and a utility bed with lift gate. I have no clue what it weighs or what the rating is for it, but it handles an AC condenser unit, A coil, tools and a couple of guys without too much trouble. It still goes 70 on the freeway loaded down. It's got 200K on it, and it's definitely worn out. I'm sure it was an awesome little ride when it was new. My boss has commented a couple of times that he'd like to replace the thing with something newer, but there isn't anything comparable.

Why the OVER KILL with the dually?

Sure - it looks cool and looks like its a clean build. But damn..... If you're gonna go that far...... have the $$ & balls left over and swap a V8 in it.

Atleast with a V8 - your contractor buddies won't laugh at you.

just looks like a gardening truck to me...
all the time in San Diego I see tiny 4 cal single cabs (not tacomas per say) actually smaller trucks with dullies and flat beds...
Gardeners like it cuz they can get at least one lawn mower up there and a tonnn of other tools... where as the standard 6 foot bed would get a lawn mower, and some other tools.. but throwing clippings in there or any back up stuff would be impossible and when you'd pull the mower out everything would fall apart.. a flat bed like this makes for way more room and a simple loading ability. Maybe it can't pull a ton of weight, but easily it could haul a lawn mower (other trimming tools) and clippings and whatever else they haul around.

I think it's cool! I'd never drive it, no use.. unless I could park a RZR 4 on it, but I'm sure any gardener would LOVE this!!

    Don't hate

bulding a flatbed and converting to a dually is MUCH MUCH cheaper than swapping a V8

do you realize how much it would cost to do such a thing? unless you ghetto'd out and threw a carb'd 350 in there, the amount of Money, work, time and custom fabrication is much greater than what's needed to make a flatbed truck...

Never said it can't be done, it's just ridiculous. Toyota used to make a small 1-ton dually which is what your picture is. It's a lot different than taking a 4 cylinder small pickup and throwing dual wheels on the back. Unless you strengthen the drive train and beef up the suspension, the stock 2nd Gen 4 banger is NOT meant to haul that kind of weight...

I don't care about the flatbed..... it has purpose (roominess).

But to put a dually on a 4cylinder truck, is ridiculous!!! A dually is for fullsize trucks that haul heavy ass loads. It's useless on this 4cylinder truck. If you've gone that far and put a dually on it - go even further and put a V8 in it.

You don't NEED the dually on that truck - unless of course, you're a dumb ass and tow/haul MORE than the truck was designed to handle. People just don't understand tow/haul ratings are made for a reason - but people seem to think they can haul whatever they want and put other peoples lives in jeapardy when they start driving with an overloaded truck.

just because it's slow, doesn't mean it's unsafe. and the modifications made, are specifically for hauling more weight. If there's a full floating axle underneath there, there is no other need to strengthen the other parts of the drivetrain. it might not be the "best" thing to do, but it'll get the job done and as long as it was put together decently, it'll be pretty safe.

power isn't everything, and the frame can handle. as long as they don't throw like a ton and a half of stuff back there, it'll be g. just don't drive like racecar and everything will be ok.

take a look at the toyota truck camper things the others posted. that is a hella slow truck, with a hella small frame, with a massive body on it, hella unstabe, but they were good little truck/home things. the dually wheels don't rip off at highway speeds and such.

sure it's not the most legit truck, but it's not a rolling deathtrap and i think its pretty neat. can't beat the beastly, hella durable 2TR. ;) and you know whoever drives this truck will never, ever speed or get anywhere past the speed limit.
