We are having new issues with our 2005 toyota tacoma. Today my boyfriend was driving home and he says the tacoma made a weird noise and died while in the middle of driving. He had to push the truck home (I wasn't with him) by himself and the truck wouldn't start up again. He said the temperature gage didn't indicate that it was overheating when it died. After he pushed it home, it wouldn't start. But, I tried it and got it to start but it was sluggish. I checked the temperature gage and it went straight to 'H' so I turned it off and let him know. We smelled something burning, and noticed that the engine oil was burning.
He put in more coolant, but it was still overheating. We checked to see if there were any leaks/dripping under the truck, but it was dry. He has a friend looking at it right now.

Before all of this happened, we noticed that the air conditioner was giving us warm air. He decided to add freon to see if the cold air would work again. It did, but it would go from warm air to cold air. Not sure if he put too much in. I don't know if that has anything to do with what happened today.

I think it might be something with the thermostat. Can anyone help? Advice?

No leaks, but we just found out that the thermostat was rusted shut

Or the coolant was factory (unlikely but possible) and was broken down and allowing water condensation to build in the system

Toyotas are forgiving, but each is different and luck varies

yeah...rusted thermostat does not sound good. won't be the only thing that won't be happy if that is the case.
