That would be a nice grenade lob over the wall. Should include the tag line "go ahead...pay close to full retail of a new 3rd gen for a used up truck".

All this stuff reminds me of high school...ha.

OP seemed sensitive about the rich/poor thing. It's actually more about smart money and wise financing. I'm amazed when someone makes a statement about how rich someone is, when they are not. It's all about making wise financial choices.

To me it's less risky to spend $28k-$30k on a new vehicle vs $16k-$28k for a used vehicle.

We are in big trouble as a society when owning a new Tacoma is considered rich/wealthy. As for me I save money in many ways to pay off my truck.

That's the boat that I was in. Instead of being pissed at peeps driving 3rd Gens, the 1st and 2nd Gen'ers need to start selling theirs for less. Hahaha!

I hear you on that! I got tired of learning stupid lessons the hard way. I also take pride in doing alot with very little. It's the best game in town. Forget about video games, the game of real life is where it's at.

I've cut back on eating out, and when I need something I'll get it on sale. It's amazing what you can do with savings.

That's why there are options in life.

To me it is far less risky to buy an $18k clean one owner well maintained used vehicle, with all the TSBs, recalls and other stuff already taken care of--like my '09 DCSB which has now been driven 7,000 miles with zero issues, and without being back to the dealer--than to throw $29k at a new one and have to deal with all the B.S. that comes with an as yet unproven machine.

Keep in mind I'm old so the "features", "doodads", "tech stuff" are meaningless to me; just more stuff to break. We have not bought a new car or financed one in over 40 years. In fact if I had life to do over financing cars and buying new ones would right top of the list of mistakes to not make again...

Right there with you. Life got stupid tight last couple years. I stopped spending as much as possible, having Friday breakfast with friends, and asked the Fam to cut back as much as possible. Then, I had rough summer with breakdowns on my motorcycles. That was what pushed me over the edge to start looking at four wheels again. I thought I could get a nice, used Taco or Jeep. No dice, but thankfully all the cutting back paid some long standing bills, built back some cushion, and allowed room for the Taco payments.

It is probably the first Christmas in 5yrs or so that we aren't near the bottom of our bank account and just hoping to make it through.

The funny thing, is if you go to the main page you see this:
    https://www.carcomplaints.com/Toyota/Tacoma/

As you can see, a 10 year old vehicle (2007 Tacoma), where there has been 5x as long to make a complaint, has a much lower total number of complaints than a two year old model, the 2016 Tacoma.

And the funny thing is with the 2007, is the worst complaint was the accelerator sticking, which was largely due to floor mats.

Again, not to say the 3rd gen is a bad truck. It is not. It is better than any other truck on the market from a reliability standpoint other than a Tundra (the 3URFE is pretty bullet proof). And when people come on here and flame the 3rd gen., I understand the need to get defensive, but we should all complain to Toyota that they haven't lived up to their own standards on the current gen. With a little tightening of the quality control (diff quality check/install, proper fluid levels, crank position sensor, stalling issue, some tweaks to the ECU, etc..., too much really), this truck would be great. Not that it is a failure by any means, but the small quality details that one expects from a Toyota 4x4 have been hit or miss. Again, when Ovtune and SSP can make the truck so much better than the factory shifting, which shows that the 3.5 has sufficient power, and Toyota, even after a TSB can't get it right, you have to wonder WTF is going on.

Tacoma sales are still really high, so I guess Toyota doesn't appear to have a huge incentive to care. I love the Tacoma, and can't wait to get another one after the numerous small details get up classic Toyota standards.

I went through the same thing in 99. My 99 Tacoma was my first Toyota truck. I ended up with a 4 cyl manual at slightly lower cost OTD than a loaded Frontier V6 Auto. When I sold, the blue book on my Tacoma was thousands higher than the Frontier model I was looking at.

The resale on the Tacoma is insane. I usually own a Tacoma for 6 years, and have sold for approximately $3,000 less than I paid (not including taxes). Outside of a few outliers (FJ after discontinued, rare models, etc.,) you won't find a mass produced vehicle that holds it's value like the Tacoma. It is the reason I will only buy them new, as the used pricing is simply insane.

Pointless to argue it now--time will tell. Toyota's big problem now is that after four rusty frame campaigns, (yep, 4; 3 voluntary, 1 court ordered) for 1995 to 2010 models; if the 2011+ models are not pretty much immune to the problem winning another class action suit against would be a piece of cake.

Which begs this question: For those in the rust belt that have 2011+ Tacos, what do your frames look like? Early next year would be the time to get a suit going as it takes a couple years to get a final order...

I'm not arguing about the future. My point is what has already happened and that you can't extrapolate that going forward.

True that would be employing genetic fallacy; and to assume the newer is better is an appeal to novelty fallacy.

    Time is the great equalizer...

My mother's father had a full head of hair when he passed away at about 80... I had little enough hair by 30 where shaving it was the way to go. I think it is just luck of the draw on some thing (my fathers side of the family was mostly bald, so that is where I got it from I'm sure).

My brother on the other hand, is 2 years older and still had all his hair so he fits what you said... That means we fit perfectly that one of us each took after 1 side of the family :)

Toi stay somewhat on topic: As for consumer reports. I have seen all the articles posted on here and... I am glad the Tacoma is not what they think it should be.
