People that I know that really know cars considered the rear diff recall a small "no big deal" recall. I guess they might be right when considering the history of recalls of other makes and models.

That was a QA/QC issue for sure. And the system Toyota has in place for tracking the problem down and addressing it shows that their QA/QC methods and procedures are pretty robust. And kudos to them for seemingly getting in front of the issue. Other makers have to be forced to do the smallest things.

If these trucks were $10k less there would be less complaining. $30k+ is no small investment for anyone.

I remember in the late 70's/early 80's I went with my Dad to get a new car. The first and last time he bought "new". He really wanted a Honda but settled on the Cheby Citation because it was $5k instead of the $8k Honda was selling at. Long story short, the Citation was a total piece of crap.

Then I remembered in the mid to late 1990's when Honda's were at the $22k mark, which at that time seemed ridiculous.

Now the bench mark price points are in the $30k+ range. And all the manufacturers try like hell to nudge every buyer into that range.

Alright, i'm not trying to bust your chops, I respect your opinion, I just disagree with your reasoning.
Good luck on your hunt for the FJ-40.

Getting off topic a little, but does anyone think people blow Toyota issues way out of proportion compared to domestic? I remember the accelerating fiasco but then it turned out the media was just on a witch Hunt. ABC literally doctored a "test" to show Toyotas accelerating when it was complete bullshit. ( I could rant a bit longer about this it was honestly straight up lies).

Then you have GM having issues that quite literally killed some people.

Maybe it's just me being weird, but I've definitely felt some conspiracy in journalism in favor of domestic brands.

In my mind I thought I was making the arguement about how expensive cars have become over time.

And also the moral of the story is to get what you really want and "don't be like dad..."

Audi went through the same thing in the '80's. It almost forced them from the market. See the shitation mentioned above to get a refresh on 80's domestic cars...

The GM shit was early 2000s. They covered it up for more than a decade

I was gonna say the same thing about Audi, I also vaguely remember something about the Media going crazy about Chevy Trucks with exploding fuel tanks.

Don't forget the Ford Exploder. The case that made Ford have to fix that shit happened not to far from where I grew up.

I actually saw one of these happen in person on the highway one day. Guy/gal was cruising along right in front of me in the middle lane of the freeway passing an exit ramp when they suddenly jerked to the right to make the exit and the rear driverside tire... well exploded, causing the vehicle to barrell roll across the ramp into the grass. I thought it was amazing to see.

I was a young deputy at the time. Happened on my off days. But I do remember having to babysit investigators from Ford, and the Feds. Guy wound up getting one hell of a settlement. The amount was never publicly disclosed, but it was found out later after the mans death that it was somewhere north of 20 million. Not much comfort in that, as the man lost his wife and toddler son.

Remember the Yugo? It was such a piece of crap and a girl I knew had one when it first came out. When I checked it out I remember seeing the plastic fuel tank fully exposed, as if it had no interior panels. What a cheap POS...and dangerous:

Apparently it was sooo bad there is a book about it.

I remember watching a TV show called Motor Trend or something like that where they rigged an Explorer to blow a tire without letting the driver know which tire, no matter the speed or which tire did it ever overturn, the driver never reacted crazy by slamming on the brakes or yanking on the steering wheel. If I recall correctly, after the Feds did all the investigating the blame ended up on Firestone for defective tires

I think a lot of the shit that the Samurai got put on it was due to operator error.

I still think most people drove these like cars causing the problems. Since the Explorer really kicked off the SUV craze, lots of them were driven by people new to this type of vehicle. The accident I saw, the driver definitely made a crazy move and then got dumped.

I think its safe to say that most of these issues are caused by humans.
