Looking good!! Now enjoy shooting that rifle!!

I typically just use hot water to clean cosmoline from metal parts. For the wood, I put them out in the sun and wipe them down after the cosmo sweats out. For a really dirty one, I'll use a bit of Simple Green on rag.

Mineral Spirits will strip the shellac from the wood - OK if that's what you want.

The tiger stripe pattern on the stock of my M39 is typical - it is the Birch wood pattern - mine just seems to have a more pronounced pattern than many I've seen.

I have an Arisaka Type 99 that my dad sent home from Okinawa. Excellent rifle. It has one of the strongest receivers/actions of all the WWII bolt action rifles.

Nice looking guns men!! I'll take some more pictures of it, mainly the barrel so I can get all y'alls opinion on it. From the looks of it, it didn't seem scored or nicked, but I don't know shizz about guns.

I let the stock sit out in the sun and I just wiped it down enough to not be greasy. I saw a video where a guy uses easy off oven cleaner and strips it down to the bare wood, sands it, then uses some linseed oil on it after. It looked really really nice. I don't know. I like the natural wood look, but then, I like the look of it being like used. Maybe I should just buy 3-4 more and do what I want with them LOL.

Here's my barrel with my potato camera. Sorry guys. Kinda hard to get a good focus and hold the damn flashlight and snap pic. This thing is pretty much the same all the way down. a3a9y7eg_1e922352fd2decd7c3af98d4a76d3d562debc18d.jpg

What grain ammo are you peeps shooting. I've read that over 180 gr kicks. Which is what I have. The 147 surplus that I shot before tickled. Didn't kick like I thought it was.

It really depends on the powder load. The weight of the bullet will impact the ballistics but they are all "generally" the same diameter. Where the bullet size, not the grain/weight, will matter is based on the actual diameter of the bore. There are wide variations - I've seen .310 to .315. Slugging the bore will tell you how strong the bore actually is.

I typically shoot 147 grain for matches - reload my own. MILSURP is not reliable for a consistent muzzle velocity so I only use it for plinking. Also, all MILSURP is corrosive - civilian stuff is not. So, be sure what you are shooting and clean accordingly.

Nothing like the Mosins to give you a little shoulder toughening!!

Of course, the top three in this pic - British Enfields in .303 British - will give them a run for the money, too.

I've got 2 mosins, first I just Monday, it's a Russian Tula marked 91/30, has had the wood refinished, I'm debating stripping the urethane and refinishing the stock again with either red shellac or BLO. Any opinions on that? I lean BLO if I decide to, but Russian red shellac or a copy of it also sounds appealing.

    ImageUploadedByTapatalk1405535517.162896.jpg

And a Finnish mosin 28/30, this one I bought for 125$ a few months ago, with neither me nor anyone else in the shop I work at knowing what it was other than it was a mosin and not standard lol

I'll give you $200 for that Finnish! Lol.

Good to hear you got some good guns. I got to shoot mine two weeks ago and man it's lovely. I want another, but I want to make it a sniper rifle.

    Not a chance lol

It took some work to get it looking good lol. Receiver was covered in surface rust, the bore was bad as well, though it wasn't sewer pipe bad. It took me 3 days total working in the evenings to get it looking good, first evening I got All the surface rust off with 0000 steel wool and clp, then sprayed foaming bore cleaner into the bore and let sit and pull a Hoppe's steel tornado brush through it (it was bad enough for the steel brush), repeat a few times, then do the foaming bore cleaner and let sit over night pull a brush through in the AM, the. Do it all over when I get back home from work. Last day or so I was pulling a bore snake through it then finally patches.

I'd really like to find the correct sling and bayonet for the Finnish, problem is the sling will run me the same price and the gun and the bayonet will run me 4-500

I debating getting a PU sniper scope for the 91/30, depending on how it shoots. It may get a set of rear peep sights from here mojo sights as they replace be rear sight and and can be put back.
