These things are notorious for throwing rounds due to barrel heat. The snipers were all bedded using a felt-like barrel wrap and some had other bedding where the receiver sets into the stock. I use a similar wrap for my competition sniper rifles and, combined with hand loads, see little difference in round strike as the barrel heats. They are just fun to shoot rifles.

My latest, 1938 M91/30 Izzy. Finn captured with "SA" and "41" stamp on the barrel. Just got her and will start cleaning it up tonight, she was someone's shooter for sure. Strong rifling but it's a little dirty.0112160922a.jpg

Interesting. If you look at the top of this page you can kind of see my Finn with [SA], D and 41 stamps. Mine has the Finn hangers as well. Do you mind me asking what you paid?

Mine did not have the Finn hangers but came with a nice SA marked sling. Whoever shot her before did a nice job cleaning the bore but that was all. She is cleaning up nicely and Ill post pics when done, I paid 225.00 (not including shipping). I'm curious how much you paid because they seem near identical.

That sounds like a great price! I paid $550 for my 2 rifles and thought that was a good deal. I can look at the date on my rifle when I get home but I'm not real familiar with Finn rifles. The other rifle I got is interesting in that it's missing the top handgaurd like a Finn but has no Finn markings. The date places it in the Spanish civil war Era but It could also be a Finn drill rifle.

550 for two Mosins is a good deal. I'm a history buff and love the history of Mosins. I have a couple of other Milsurp rifles but enjoy the MNs the most. That's a nice collection you have there.

Thank you. I love collecting milsurps but Mosin Nagants speak to me the most, I don't know why. I could talk all day about them haha. Not pictured is my M/N 91 New England Westinghouse with [SA] stamps. Off the top of my head I own 3 ex dragoon 91/30's, 1 MO stamped 91/30, 1 run of the mill 91/30, 1 m38, 1 Hungarian and 1 Russian m44. Also, I have an carcano model 1891 with marksmanship stamps.

BTW I looked at my Finn and its a 1939 Tula. Does yours have the =I= stamp on the butt plate or anywhere else on the gun?

This is probably the most interesting MN I own."Early" stock spliced in to a "late" war stock and a barrel with the CN stamp (sniper). Your Finn Westinghouse sounds nice and it's on my shortlist of MMs I want. I'll check my Finn MN's for that Mark, I have three that I assume are Winter War veterans, all SA marked and two with the 41 Mark. I'm now focusing on specific versions, a SCW, Westinghouse or M38.

Any idea what the 41 means? I did a little research and didn't find much on the D or 41 stamps. I found another N.E.W. on armslist not long ago but the guy wanted way to much and the only Remington I've seen was all chopped up. Yours is interesting, I wouldnt mind owning an ex sniper myself. The mystery MN I recently purchased is non import stamped and has 91 bands but I really dont think its SCW.

Ugh. All this mosin nagant talk has me seriously considering a C&R license.

The 41 mark is unknown but is believed to be applied to rifles captured during the "Winter War" by the Finns. This could be the year that the rifle went through rework by the Finns. This really makes sense to me as I have never seen that mark on any MN other than Finns dated 1942 or earlier.
The "D" mark means that the barrel throat was modified to accept the D166 cartridge.
I have no idea what the "I" Mark you mentioned is for, again none of my Finns have one.
I encourage you to get a FFL03 C/R license because you seem like a person who appreciates the historical value of these rifles. I have one, very easy to get and makes it so much easier to acquire these rifles. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
You may want to check out www.7.62x54r.net, fantastic website for all things Mosin.

The "D" mark indicates the rifle was reworked to fire the Finn D166 cartridge. Can you shoot a picture of the "41" mark? Numbers, generally, refer to the arsenal where specific work was done. I can't find a specific reference to 41 in my reference.

I've had my C&R for 12 years or so. It easily pays for itself through avoiding transfer fees, having to have background checks run, etc. Go for it!!

1Shifter - did you ever check the receiver of your Tula to see if it was drilled and filled? Some rifles were, apparently, marked for sniper conversion and then never done.

By the way, I wonder if the "41" is actually just a poorly struck Finn Arsenal 1 stamp?

No drilled holes, just the Mark on the barrel so it was never converted to full sniper. From what I understand only barrels from
Tula had this mark for Sniper rifles, Izzy does not have this Mark.

The "41" Mark is pretty clear and is usually on the opposite side of the barrel from the "SA" Mark. As with most things MN the Mark remains a mystery, does make sensethiugh that it's only seen on Winter War rifles. I'll post a pic of the Mark tonight.

hey I have an ati bent bolt and standard scope mount on order and im gonna sell my scout set up preassembled, scope, rings, and rail for $50 buck shipped if anyone is interested. its an aim 2-7x42mm (that's 42 not 32 like most that I have seen) her is the best pic I have right now, and ill get some more close up pics this evening. there are a few minor scratches on the scope from moving and sliding it around to get it to fit my eyes good while the rings were a little too tight but I have only fired around 40 rounds or so out of the gun while the scope was on it.

I also upgraded the nuts on the base of the scope rings to locking nylon insert. its been pretty good for me I just want a little more magnification for longer range deer hunting. I would have no problem shooting out 150+ yards with this set up and it will make someone a great brush gun in the right application.

Oops, I missed those from the 54r site. Looks like the =II= is a inspection stamp. The 54r site has "2" listed as a 2ND grade accuracy stamp and interestingly the "mystery" second mosin nagant I got in the deal has some on the rifle. I don't know if I mentioned it earlier but my "mystery" rifle doesn't have import stamps.

Mine is clearly struck as well. SA on the left side D on the top and 41 on the right side of the receiver if memory serves.

From what I understand some of the very early CAI imports were not stamped. CAI put a very discreet import Mark on the end of the barrel.
