I always like comments like that when I step on to the line in Vintage Sniper matches. "Soviet trash." And then we compare scores at the end.

These rifles were, in fact, made as cheapy and as quickly as possible. The war effort demanded it. But, they seem to have served their purpose, no? And, as for the snipers, they are more durable and had fewer problems than anything the Allies made. The scopes on the Brit 4Ts and the US 1903-A4 were notorious for drifting - not the Mosins. You can call them cheap, trash and for poor people..but to collectors who know and have worked with them they are quite interesting...and quite worthy of respect given the times under which they were manufactured.

Colt Trooper Mkiii's are for poor people. Mosin's are for the thrifty.

My 1930 Tula hex receiver cost more than my brand new American made Hi-Point handguns. I wonder if they'll still be functional in 86 yrs. I think what the poster meant was that he likes them and can afford them because he is poor and excited to be able to afford something. That or just some elitist douchebag troll. Guess what, there are people with better shit than what you have, regardless of what it is or who you are. Same way for everybody.

That's correct - Tula marked their receivers with the CH or CN mark - Izhevsk did not. Izhevsk marked scope numbers on the left forward side of the receiver, Tula did not originally do that. More recent imports of refurbished snipers have the scope SN stamped on both Izhevsks and Tulas. The timing of those markings is not confirmed but several of the Gurus who saw these rifles when they were imported indicated that the numbers were present when the crates were opened.

Still lots of mystery and sleuthing possible with the Mosins.

This is a shot of my Tula ex-sniper before re-conversion. Many of the snipers/ex-snipers also have smooth receivers indicating more exacting work. They are an interesting sub-set of Mosins.

From what I read, round receivers were war yrs to save material and faster production.

If I remember correctly, production shifted from hex to round receivers in the 1935/1936 timeframe.

True but I have seen hex receivers on late model barrels. This happened during the refurb, probably after the war. Its possible because the receiver and barrel are two separate parts.

From what I remember mosin nagants have hex, highwall and low wall receivers. Low wall I believe is the unfinished looking one made during the war to save on production time.

Btw you could say the 2.7l tacoma is for poor people as well. Lol

The top pic is the "41" stamp on the side of the barrel.
Bottom pic is the MN after I cleaned her up. She was very dirty, except for the bore. I had to soak the bolt assy in mineral spirits for a day just so I could remove the firing pin from the cocking knob.

I can't tell from the pic but is that an initial on the stock?

On the stock...yes. I'm not sure who they belong to but I expect that it was the previous owner and not "trench art". There is also a star next to the initials that I originally thought was graffiti also but I believe it is a "Tula" star. I did 3 BLO scrubs to the stock, something I usually do to M53 stocks not Mosins, and I didn't feel where the star was scribed but rather seems like a stamp. Ill post a pic to show ya what I mean.

The top pic is of the initals and star. Does anyone know if this is a Tu la star or something else?
The bottom pic is of the stock where it's spliced. I guess the Finns could have used a Tula stock when they spliced in.

I found this on my British No. 5 Mk 1 Jungle Carbine - an all perfect beauty. Ole' Merl put his name/initials on several places - luckily discrete.

That looks like a Tula star - I seem to remember seeing others marked like that but don't have one myself.

That's cool, I have a MN M91 that has the serial number scribed into the inside of the top handguard.

    That initial does look old.

This is the stock mark on my Finn.

This is one of the "2" on my mystery rifle.

I see a lot of "2" and "K" marks on stocks but I have no idea of their meaning. There are so many marks and stamps on MNs that the meaning has been lost.
