The circular mark on the stock is a Finnish arsenal mark, according to Lapin's book.

"K" is a Soviet proof mark. I also have no clue on what the number 2 represents. As 1Shifter said, there were so many marks - and without access to the Soviet records - no way to know the meaning of many of them.

0123161107.jpg 0123161106.jpg 0123161105b.jpg So I bought a 1916 MN last year that is in pretty rough shape cosmetically. By that I mean the the stock and the bottom of the barrel and receiver are still packed with cosmoline. The former owner wiped down the outside of the gun and that's about it. Usually I would wrap everything up in plastic bags and throw it on the dash of my Ranger and let the sun do it's magic. That doesn't work in the middle of winter. For the metal parts I thought boiling water or a heat gun. Any suggestions for the stock? Normally I keep wiping it down but the Cosmo on this gun feels like it's gummy and almost baked into the wood. Also there is a coat of varnish that looks like it was done by the former owner, not a arsenal. What are your thought about trying to remove the varnish and try to restore the stock to original.

I would say that a chemical strip like strip ease or something is gonna be the easiest way to remove all the varnish and baked on cosmo. Everything should bubble up and just wipe off and u may have to run some sand paper over it when ur done cuz the grain might raise a little. Make sure u wear gloves, that stuff burns in the smallest of knicks on ur hands

I use Simple Green and warm water. That seems to cut the cosmo and the warm water will help move it off.

I tried this today on my "snow day" and it worked great. Several passes and most of it is gone. Still trying to decide what to do with the stock, I may just wipe it down a few times with lemon oil. That M91 is 100 years old so I guess I shouldn't expect too much. Thanks for the idea Devious6.

Thanks but I already have a spare stock. The M91 is gonna be my "winter project" so I expect it's gonna be a long haul.

Glad to see it worked! I've been using that method for 3 or 4 years now - worked like a charm on the Martini Henry I restored two summers ago. I've generally not done much to the Mosin stocks to refinish them. I've seen some people strip and reapply shellac and some strip and leave them plain. For me, the wear and tear is just part of the history.

I agree with you Devious6 on refinishing stocks. I think that "less is best" when working with these guns. I don't sand or cut down stocks at most Ill do a BLO scrub followed up with some Toms stock wax. Ill probably try to sweat as much of the grease out of the stock and make several passes with some Scotts LG or lemon oil. I appreciate the help, it's always good to get advice from someone who appreciates the history of these weapons.

I have a slip on brake on mine, it really knocked down the recoil. I've had mine come off before and I haven't shot it off yet, but the 3 time it came off, I just tightened it even more and hasn't come off since. Mind you it was about 1-200 rounds before it actually came off the first two times. They work, you just have to be mindful. I only got it because I wanted to keep my iron sights. I do want to get another and put in an archangel stock and pimp it out, but that will come eventually. I have a video of the recoil somewhere after I put the muzzle brake on. Not sure if I posted it here

you're from bama right? what part? I got mine at van's in cullman ($179 a couple years ago I couldn't tell you how much they are now but a quick phone call could), I haven't found anything worth lookin at online much, but I did see where cabela's had an in store only deal for $169 a few weeks ago, but again I dunno if they are in stock you'd just have to call. have you looked at some local pawn shops/gun shops like maybe larry's if you're near Huntsville/madison

Central Alabama south of bham. Haven't checked up that way. Looked at Birmingham pistol but no luck. Same with all big name online places. Guess I'll have to wait a little while for some more to be opened up.

well it may be a little propaganda but I heard that the UN is destroying all of it's military surplus arms to keep terrorist from getting cheap military equipment, and Obama sign as thing in agreement saying basically he would have any imported in to the country in efforts to help the cause, so I wouldn't expect much more to roll in, at least in crates like it use to. makes sense to me since its been a while since ive seen a crate of mosins for sale and the prices keep goin up.

Mosins have been imported to the U.S. since the 1970's. I think that the available supply is down simply because there's not many left. I've been collecting Milsurp rifles for a few years and unfortunately even a "plain Jane" Mosin will go anywhere from 190-225. Your best bet is to try and find a private seller or pawn shop, there are deals out there but you have to work for em.
