I always thought the earlier ones looked best. '97-'98. Regular old glass headlights recessed into grill. If they had vent windows I'd be looking for one. always thought the '01-04's looked funny up front.
I'm not big on styling for trucks. A truck is a truck and the more they (anyone) tries, the further they stray.

I really like my 2000. The simplicity of crank windows, manual locks, manual seats and 2WD makes it easy to work on and fewer things to fail. But it also has conveniences like a full gauge cluster, A/C, cruise, sliding rear window, etc.

It's the last of a generation of simple and lightweight pick-ups but has modern conveniences and safety features.

the '98 has plastic headlamp housings that can get foggy?, as did the '97 2wd models i think, not sure what the 2wd 95.5 and 96 look like its been so long since I have seen one! heck I only learned (or re-learned) that the '97 2wd did not look like mine in the front (its the struggles of being on lonely middle USA island)
    ...
perhaps the PRErunners are the best, they look like 4wd but yet they are not

You mean if I ordered a set of doors from overseas for a 2000ish Hilux, I could have vent windows?

Drive by wire throttle bodies. Remember all those people running their Toyotas into things for scams? (or maybe not)

Those were the actual last 'real' compacts.

ya know........if you're looking for a nice compact.....and think Toyotas have gone crazy in price for a good old example............you can still find nice HardBody Nissans for better prices. Sounds like heresy I know but they were an excellent little truck.

Their 4 banger was a great engine and their 6 was better than the 3.0.
    So there's that.
    I'd rock one.
In fact. I may be on a quest.

It's the truth. I bought a 94 Nissan Hardbody 4 cyl 5 MT 4x4 in 2000 with 30k miles and my pops bought it off me about 10 years ago and it's still only at 150k miles but runs beautifully. Simple to work on like a Yota. Not as good looking as a Toyota but a damn reliable and durable work horse.
It's not by dumb luck in all those remote areas of the world they use Toyotas and Nissans, seems I see more Toyota though

    4 run, 2 don't
Drive by wire as mentioned, computer, and other odds and ends.

It's harder to source parts for an 03/04 than it is for an 02 and below if you're doing a Prerunner -> 4x4 conversion. 03/04 parts need other 03/04 parts.

This is like the people who didn't want to get a fuel injected motor because that fancy new technology will be expensive to fix. Sure it's expensive IF it were to fail, but that's just not really a common thing.
