Most frequently used socket sizes

As my Tacoma general preparedness OCD is advancing, I am trying to include the most frequently used sockets in my mobile tool kit.

From having completed numerous repairs on my own, so far I can recollect mostly using 10, 12, and 14 mm sockets. Do you think most roadside and away from garage kind of emergencies could be attended to with those three sizes if I had each in 1/4 and 3/8" drive socket versions and had respective ratchets/drivers in my kit? I know that the crank nut is 22 mm on a 1/2" driver but that's an outlier in terms of size.

 

17mm and 19mm

 

10, 12, 14, 17, 19 are pretty much the most commonly needed sizes on the truck. Can do alot of things with just those 5 sockets. I have like a 27 piece socket set and I can do just about anything on the truck with that, I just have a few extra individual sockets I bought as needed to fill in the gaps... and honestly thinking about it most of those sockets were purchased for jobs other than the taco.

 

if you offroad quite a bit, i would recommend getting all the sockets needed to replace a cv

That's great, I'm trying to carry only the most essential, for space conservation and minimalism.

 

Upper control arm bolt, lower shock mount, lower ball joint bolts on the spindle,cam bolts,and lug nuts are just a few that are 19mm on my truck.

 

i offroad in my 4runner. not the tacoma.

 

Start looking at what may commonly fail and leave you stranded, and you'll quickly realize you need a stockpile of parts and fluids more than a just a bench of sockets:

Radiator hoses and hose clamps
Wiper blades
Headlight bulbs
Belts
Fuses
Vacuum hoses and clamps
CV split boot repair kit
Generic tire plug kit
Brake line splice kit, fluid, and bleeder tools
Tire pump
Battery jump pack

Along with all the angled- and straight pliers, screw drivers, breaker bars, socket extensions... necessary to do the work. The list gets pretty daunting, and is just for on-road use. For daily driving in the city (where I'm always within 10 miles of a Toyota dealer), it's better to just get a AAA membership and leave the stuff at home. For wheeling you'd want to bring your entire tool set, spare CV driveshafts, hubs, tie rods...

 

35MM for the hub nut, Needle nose pliers for cotter pin, large flat tip for the dust cap, Pry bar for popping out the CV from the diff, basic 1/2inch drive sockets and wrench's (already mentioned) as well as gear oil. And maybe some 550 cord or rope to hold the spindle out of the way while you pull the CV.

 

You must have been reading my mind. I want to do the same thing. One suggestion I would have is to include wrenches as well. Both have their benefits in different situations.

 

8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 21mm

 

what are the 8 and 21 for? the crank nut is 22

 

21 for lugs.... 8 for various things.

Just carry a set that goes from like 8-24 and a big mexican socket set (crescent wrench) and you will be good.

 

I bought this about a week after buying my truck. Great price and the carrying case is nice. Fits nicely in one of the compartments behind my back seat. Knock on Wood - but I've not had to use it on my truck yet. I see it as cheap insurance.

8 is used for various interior areas under the dash. Stereo mounts being one of them. I think it is used for the battery terminal bolts too.

 

I like my deep well 19mm socket for lugs
