Motor mount woes

    Hey all.

So before you respond- I know I’m an idiot buying aftermarket parts. Times are tough and my truck needs them bad.

    This is a 97 Tacoma V6 with 4x4.

I bought “Anchor” motor mounts from Rock Auto. Got halfway through the project only to find that the locating pin is about 1/4” too far out from the threaded post.

I ran to oreilly, and they pulled up 2 different sets of mounts that were supposed to also match my truck. Neither of them did. One set had the offset locating pin (I think for 04+), and the other set had the locating pin in exactly the same place as the Anchor mounts.

I know the previous owner swapped the engine in this truck, so I’m starting to wonder if that’s the root of the problem. But as far as I can tell, the 95-99 Tacomas and same gen 4Runners all had the same engine mounts, and the tundra mounts look totally different.

I have accepted that I should simply order the OEM parts, but now I’m in a bind because I have no idea whether they’ll actually fit.

I unfortunately didn’t take any pictures, it was a long and disappointing day (had to reassemble with the stock mounts). The locating pin is parallel with the threaded post, and is located in the “upward” position in comparison to the engine side of the mounting bracket. I just find it really suspicious that none of the aftermarket mounts fit.

Has anyone had a similar experience, or can maybe someone provide advice?

I’m not sure which part number you got from RA or which one O’Reilly pulled for comparison but according to Achor, these will fit the 5vz Tacoma
    B9120
    B8647
    B9014

Worth checking A62550 as it fit the 5vz T100 while B9079 fit the tundra 5vz

B9120 pin is centered to the stud, ~.50” away
B8647 pin is centered to the stud, ~.75” away
B9014 pin is ~.50” offset to the side of the stud

If you continue to struggle with this, you may have to order the mounts listed for an '03/04 truck.

I recently helped a friend swap a 5vz (that we scored from a local pick and pull) that came out of an '04 Prerunner, into his '98 Tacoma (his truck had a blown head gasket). He ordered OEM mounts for his '98 Tacoma, and the locating pin didn't line up with the '04 motor mount brackets.

So we removed the brackets from his blown motor and bolted them onto the '04 motor, and then everything lined up. This was a quicker solution for us, with both motors on engine stands, than returning motor mounts and ordering the correct set.

Yeah… unfortunately I think there’s something fucky going on like that with my truck too. Makes it even worse without knowing the history. After the research I’ve done… I think this is a 4Runner engine with 4Runner mounts. I don’t have the equipment to lift the engine to change out the engine-side brackets, so I’m fishing around to see if I can get the right part. Haven’t had a chance to really dig into that part of it yet.

None of the ones I tried ended up being correct- I threw the old shot ones back on. Zero parts stores in my area carry the version with the locating pin closer to the bolt, they’re all either too far away or offset. The one I bought from RA was Anchor 8162.

if you have a floor jack, you can lift up the engine from below. Just put something like a piece of wood between the jack and oil pan. That's how I changed my engine mounts. I imagine you should be able to get at the brackets as well. Obviously just go slow and check all wires and connectors to make sure they're not getting stretched!

    YMMV though - I have a 5 lug and it's much lower than a 6 lug.

Interesting. I checked all 3rd gen 4R and it shows the same 3 mount listed for Tacoma. I cross reference 8162 and its listed for T100 with the 5vz and pickup/4Rrunner with the 22r, 22re, 22ret & 3vz motor.

Where is your pin located? Centered? Offset?

Have you tried ordering in a set of mounts for an '04 truck?

If his truck has a swapped motor with mounting brackets from a different year truck, that won't solve OP's problem

You really can't lift the motor high enough with a floor jack to remove the motor mount mounting brackets. And the passenger side one sits between the AC compressor and the block. So swapping out the brackets in the engine bay would absolutely suck. You'd be way better of yanking the motor out to do that. So finding motor mounts that fit is a way easier route

aaah, good to know. I just assumed that since you can replace the mounts, you'd be able to get to the brackets too!

@DoktorSlowburn feel free to ignore me :)

OP, since you have an O’Reilly near by, have them order the part I listed or the part number they don’t have in stock. Ordering should be free and can be return, free of charge if it’s incorrect.
