I've settled into a routine the last few years of either the M1-102A or the XG3614....which ever is on sale. Meijer carries both, but frequently has the M1 a couple of bucks off with their sales.

Yep that’s why I get it. It’s cheap, readily available, and works great. I change it around 5k because I’m already doing tire rotations and inspection at that interval, along with any other mx that lands at that time. I could probably stretch it slightly longer, but it’s easy to take care of while I’m already under the truck.

Last time I drained my oil it was red! That was after 20k miles. Glad I got to it when I did. I topped it of to where I could see it just below the oil filter. Really hoping the red oil didn't damage anything.

I like using synthetic because of the flexibility it gives me with regard to OCI. Life is busy, knowing that I have multiple thousands of miles on either side of an OCI in flexibility is very nice. Whether it’s 5K or 10k I know the synthetic will be fine. I prefer 5k only because the other maintenance items happen at the same intervals so it’s much more convenient to block out an hour or two ONCE than multiple times.

For me 10k miles or once a year when using synthetic oil is fine. I am ok with the cheap fram filter too.

Thanks Doc. So from this analysis, would the Super Tech oil be doing the best job removing waste from the engine, if that's the oil that seems to get most "used up"? Thanks for sharing this info!

    None... yet.
The only thing that removes waste is the filter, not the oil itself. By "used up", I meant that the additives/detergents aren't quite as long lasting as some of the premium brands, i.e. you could use those brands for 7,500-10,000 miles in most cases, along with a premium, extended mileage filter and be good to go.

Since I change every 5k, the SuperTech works for me!

Except the GX/Ultra series (gold can). Best filter on the market.....from the experts on BOBISTHEOILGUY. I've seen many of them cut open. Nothing else compares.

NO oil or filter that meets specs and changed at a reasonable or manufacturers recommended OCI is going to result in a reduction of engine life.

Thanks No Pickles. Did you also replace your timing chain and water pump at 100K mile intervals? I was told to do that when I hit 100K, which mine just did.

Timing chains are for the life of the engine, no need to replace them like a timing belt. A water pump will last as long as it last, when they start leaking it's time to replace. There are some of these engines with over 300K on the original pump.

This thread, sadly, has not gotten as confrontational as I had hoped for.

For the record I use Mobil 1 5W30 full synthetic, and OEM filters, every 5K miles. I replace the crush washer each time. My engine reports to me that it is doing awesome, by the way, and plans to live forever.

I wanted to clean my engine without taking it apart. And I know that detergents will break down oils so I drained my oil and filled it with a mixture of ajax and dish soap. She'll run great now, just gotta let it sit...

You doing it all wrong. After the oil drains you merely have to place your power washing nozzle inside the fill opening and pull the trigger.

Ahhhh, with my foam cannon attachment for added soapy action...of course!
