If you prepare yourself for the job like having all the necessary tools, rags, oil catch basin etc, it’s not that bad.
I don’t think it’s worth taking a chance of extending service intervals on a large investment such as your truck.

If you're just looking to avoid a mess, don't even bother dropping the skid. Get a plastic cup, reach in through the drivers side wheel well, and let the oil drain from the filter into the cup. Then flip the filter upside down in the cup and pull it out. I do that every oil change and spill maybe a few drops at most.

A little work and time doing it properly, versus a damaged engine and lots of time spent without a vehicle while a new engine is put in.

I weigh those points. A few minutes is worth me saving thousands of dollars and being without a vehicle for a few days at least.

Especially when the time spent is saving that much of a expense.

Or save the time from yourself doing it, and have a place of your choice do it. "While You Wait" half an hour or more.

I admit it can be a pain getting yourself started to do the oil change. I myself have just taken it in to get done. But I've then wondered if they did anything beyond just changing the oil and filter.
I just get everything set up and just do it. Then 15 or so minutes later I'm done. Plus l know that everything has been done. Plus l get to look around underneith while I'm there.

When I'm done l think to myself. Why did l make this such a big deal??? But that's me.

I have better idea. Take an old oil filter, gut it out and put back. You will never need to replace that filter, ever. An if motor brakes you can alwsys replace it with JMD. Yes I know it is expensive but think of how much money you can save on not buying new oil filters every oil change:D.

I suppose I should get underneath and check that all of my screws are there in working order. I have had the 2 local Toyota dealer mechanics here (one dealer was out of town while traveling) change mine for almost 25yrs on 2 trucks. I have always waited for them to send me a service coupon in the mail every six months with an oil and filter change deal ranging from $19 to $29 + (tax, shop materials, hazard fee, etc.) which includes a multi-point inspection. seems like an 0k deal since I don't have a lift in my garage which would make it a whole heckuva lot easier on these old bones.
There was one time though, during the multi-point inspection, I was told that my 3rd top brake light was out, and would cost maybe $20 to fix (can't remember how much long time ago). So I went out into the bay to check myself and it was working :notsure: always make sure I double check something like that from now on

of course, from what happened yesterday and the whole battery hold-down rod hook ona stick thingie left under the hood, I would probably forget to put the new filter back on

I had a jackass cop pull me over for 'brake light out' and he ran everything and says it's a warning just get it fixed. Go to parts store later and have worker come watch lights while I brake and sure enough all lights worked. I was pissed. My old man was a cop for twenty years. I know they lie to get probable cause to pull you over, etc. It's just annoying af someone can have that power man. it drives me nutz lol

I guess anyone can take it in to Oilcan Henry’s or Jiffylube but the job you do will be better quality than the Ass clowns at the lube places
    because you care......Or should care.
The guys that work at these places make a little over minimum wage, do lube jobs day in day out, most would rather be somewhere else
and only care about quitting time. Not your truck. Reason enough to just “Suck it up” and do it yourself.

I was an assclown @ JL in my late teens slaving away in the summer heat. I was trained to take very good care of customer's vehicle! so that I could sell very high margin items like lightbulbs and such ... I always loved when a manual 4x4 came in due for gearbox service  14.99 x 14.99 x 14.99 x 14.99 :spending::spending::spending::spending:

I personally have never done 10k on an oil filter on any of my cars, but have thought about it. I do not enjoy dropping the skid every time I change the oil and find that if you don't, you end up with a mess.

Thinking about doing exactly what you suggest on my wife '05 GX470. I believe, that if you know an engine to be in excellent condition with no varnish and no sludge, going 10k miles on a quality filter is no big deal. Heck, Mobil 1 oil filters say they can go 20k betweens changes.

I cut open every oil filter, after ever oil change. I would have no worries running a Wix, Napa Gold, Mobil 1, K&N, Fram Ultra for 10k miles or more in either my Taco or GX.

No offense, I just take it that way. You can buy a kit to relocate the oil filter to a much better location on the truck so yo can have easy access. Look up oil filter relocate and spots others have use to put the filter in a really easy spot to remove.

@chrispchicken9 Dude, I use full synthetic, toyota or puralator filters, and change both a 10k mile intervals. Don't bath my arm in warm motor oil, I change the oil while engine is cold. Have been doing this for 40 years. I won't use cheap crappy filters, since I've sen how poorly some of them are designed. I've seen engines ruined from people not changing oil and filters from first hand experience. If you don't change yours, that's fine by me. Just wouldn't want to buy a used vehicle from you.

Isn't the OP a 1st gen owner? If it's a 3.4, that filter is a PITA to remove. I would still change the filter each oil change but a agree that it's the worst part of the oil change. Nothing like the 4.0 engine for simplicity.

Yea it’s a big pain in the ass lol

And apparently if you look for a way to prolong filter change intervals the derks will go on a witch hunt

    I really like that 4.0

I think next vehicle will be the limited 4Runner for the full time 4wd as I’ll still have my 1st gen taco for a pickup

I’ve never taken the skid plates off to do an oil change. You can reach it behind the driver side front tire or even reach it from undernieth

I’ve always used synthetic and still change it every 3-5k
