Just curious, wondering if anyone has swapped out the 3.5 POS motor for a Gen 2 4.0.

i keep thinking about this. not to detract from the question but if i was going to all that work and expense, i would not go with a 4.0. I'd go with something worth the trouble. if you want low torque and performance then get it in a big way, not a small way. unless you're thinking 4.0+SC.

I would rather drop the 4.6L into the engine bay.

If you were gonna go thru all that trouble to swap engines, a V8 would be the way to go.

It's not like the old 4.0 is some masterpiece of an engine. If you're going to do a swap at least do it with something worthwhile.

I'm gonna be that guy. Tacomas are great. But the best truck V6 ever made was the GM 4.3L.

I would be a lot easier to put a Toyota V8 in a Toyota. And I tend to stay away from Fords.

Yeah the best decision here would be the 4.6L. If it won't fit there's the 278hp version of the 4.0 from the 4runner and I believe that version was the base Tundra motor for a couple years.

schmeh. At that point its just buying different parts. Flat plane V8 would be dope though, could be mounted lower on the chassis safely and would put the vehicles roll center closer to the ground.

depends on your definition of 'best'. LCE engineering offers fully built Toyota race motors. You could get a built 22re with 450 HP which would be a hell of an upgrade

I put a 6.7L Cummins in mine! In my opinion, it is still underpowered...
