question for you guys. I did some shopping this weekend at a dealership. Nearly every bike had a $1000-2000 markup. Is that pretty standard on bikes, and should I expect to pay that regardless of where I go? A buddy of mine explained it as bikes being a luxury item they don't really need to discount to make sales, and with current supply being low due to COVID that I would have even less negotiating power.

Is that true or would I be able to negotiate a dealer down to minimize or even eliminate the dealer markup?

It really depends on availability. If you can find the same bike at a few different dealers then you might be able to negotiate a better price or at least get some accessories tossed into the deal.

Ok makes sense. There aren't a ton of the one I'm looking at locally, but there's at least 3 across a few nearby dealerships. So I guess we'll see how lucky I can get

I just recently bought a used bike to eliminate the dealer mark ups. I may have gotten lucky but I was able to get a 2017 with only 620 miles on it, but that's probably dependent on which bike it is.

typically bikes sell at MSRP, back in the day left offer models would be marked down but now in the covid era it seems things dont get that as much...

I believe the reason you see bikes in CA being marked up is because now not all bikes are 50 state legal...

we now how many bikes that are only 49 state legal, being as CA has a more stringent emissions standard

for example my 2018 crb600rr is only 49 state legal, it is not the CA legal cbr600rr model also offered by honda here in the states...

Yeah i'd definitely be open to it, but doesn't seem there's really any used options locally, or even within a few hours drive. Otherwise I'd jump on it.

I did notice that during my research that some bikes have CA specific models, like handguns. can't say i'm too surprised..

yea its a bit confusing, if you google "49 state legal vs ca legal motorcycle" you will find a bunch of different threads online discussing the technicalities

I think that is the reason you are seeing bikes marked up in your area, and if you go out of state you will more than likely not find the correct CA legal equivalent being offered for sale

I have not seen any markup near me. Not paying below MSRP, but not above either. I have a 2022 Grom on the way for the wife, paying msrp, and a bike on the way for myself (should be here Friday) also paid msrp. Have been shopping all through this fake shimona business and haven’t seen anything near me marked up. Don’t know if that helps near you.

yea its all relative though, you guys can lane split and ride just about every day of the year with clear dry weather.... not to mention all the great canyons you can ride up and down.

CA is one of if not the most import state for the motorcycle industry here in the USA

the bike dealerships know it and the prices out the door are adjusted accordingly

How do you grom owners like them? I had a Ninja 250, 350, and 650 in the past but I don't have a motorcycle right now. Dont want to do anything other than back road riding these days, kind of tempted to get a grom since itll fit on the truck easily and wont take up much space in the garage.

I love it for what it is. Fun little bike to rip around town and on roads 45mph and slower. As long as you realize it has less than 10hp you should be good. It will cruise at 55mph but slows down on hills and a with a head wind. Got mine up to 68ish mph the other day down a hill and in a full tuck.

Yeah I have a 10 month old now so riding on the road isn't as appealing as it once was. I need to research places to dirt bike more! I dont want to do anything nuts but if I can find some nice trails I think ill go for that.

I went the dual sport route so I don't have to stay on the OHV trails.
