How many miles? I'm supposed to do mine every 16k but I waited until 20 because all the F4i guys were like "Honda valves rarely, if ever, need adjusting!" 12 of 16 were well out of spec...

Just shy of 35k. I bought it at 31k and with no maintenance records so no idea when or if its ever been done. Only 1 valve was just barely in spec, the rest were too tight.

I'm convinced people just say that because the jobs kind of a pain and they don't want to do it. I had a dealership mechanic tell me once that you really don't need to check the valve clearances because you'll hear it start to get noisy when they go out of spec. That's about when I decided I was going to learn to do every job on my bikes myself. So many bad mechanics out there.

    Tappy valves are happy valves.

@spencermarkd what is your camp setup for the bike?

I need to decide if im going to be doing freeze dried food or actual cooking. Its going to be the complete opposite from truck camping to peasant camping on the ground

For food and stuff? I made myself a little cooler thing for one of my sidecases out of cardboard, duct tape, and a blue apron box's packaging materials so I can take fresh stuff with me. Cooking I use a knockoff jet boil burner for the little propane cans with a small folding skillet thing. I also have a 1.5l sauce pot thing that the gas can fits in. One of the better things I cooked was just some easy chicken soft tacos. Froze seasoned chicken the night before, let it thaw in the cooler during the day, cooked the chicken in the skillet and heated up tortillas, pre chopped onion and cilantro and topped it off with some green chile hot sauce. Nom nom. Also super easy to grab refrigerated deli or sandwiches or whatever from stops throughout the day and keep it cool in that little cooler.

Here's an older timelapse of mine when I left for my big Yellowstone trip like 4 years ago. I think this was for about 8 days worth of camping and I had plenty of room to spare.

I think this was from that trip, too?

I’m a lazy freeze dried food kind of guy. I’ll occasionally stop at places along the ride to get fresh food but generally just go with freeze dried meals for the simplicity, light weight and small amount of room required for a bunch of food. Simplifies the kitchen gear down to a fork, spoon and jetboil. If there’s the option to have cook fires I bring a skewer and will cook steak and brats over the fire that way.

Found a pic of that cook setup. I "accidentally" got shit faced this night, by myself, in a random Idaho campground. My justification was the grocery store only had an 18 rack of pbr, and I didn't have room in my cooler to bring leftovers with me the next day, so I had to drink it all. Warm beer is no good.

Jet boils are 100% worth the space on a bike. Dehydrated food, oatmeal, morning coffee, hot water for whatever and it all packs up so small. One of these days I'm going to buy an adjustafork. The guy who makes them is an ADVRider legend in minimalist camping.

That guy is the definition of minimalist. I’ve read his reports before. No room for chairs or any comfort besides whiskey. Just strap your boot insole to your foot with the same strap that holds your bag to the bike instead of bringing flip flops, etc.

Managed to get my eBay bought and freshly rebuilt Penske rear shock installed on the FJR yesterday. Took a nice 40ish mile test ride today and without touching any adjustments so far and just using their out of the box settings this thing is amazing. Washboard sections on PA roads that used to have the bike bouncing around it just sailed right over. Firm, yet not harsh I picked some nice twistier roads to compare it to the stocker and found my speedo showing speeds that jeopardized my driving privileges yet never felt unsafe at all. Purchase price from eBay and having Penske service it prior to install and replacing the spring with one more suited to my travelling weight 2-up I have just over $600 in a shock that lists for $1150. Not a bad deal at all!

I was out at cilantro. But I was back in two posts down at shit faced on PBR.

I have an Aeropress Go that I take to work with me. So many hotels have gone to Keurig makers, and I've wasted too much time waiting in line, and too much money buying Starbucks or Tim Hortons at the airport. It's a very compact setup and makes a pretty great cup of coffee.

Cold 25 mile ride today. These Tusk bags are nice. Still waiting for the bottle holders to come tomorrow. They included 2x 35L dry pags which line the actual bags. I threw a hammock and a small lantern in so far. Ordered some cheapo Amazon folding chairs that are supposedly 0.85kg so who knows what that is in lbs. ill strap one on the top of a bag. Gotta grab my jetboil out of my truck camping gear.

Eventually ill get a Giant Loop bag for the top of the seat. I like that because it has roll top on both sides of the bag, so access is easy. But I think the upper crash bars are more useful at the moment. I also want to get the tusk tank bag and finish making the rear rack that I started
