Ya'll posting these Sumo's realllly is making me want to make the DRZ a sumo. If only I had the time to ride anything but 1 bike. Can't even use commute as a reason anymore since I go into the office max 4x a month, and usually take the dog with me. Unless I get a bike with a side car?

Bikes so far, hella rookie numbers:

    1989 Suzuki RM80
    1987 Kawasaki KDX200
    1996 Suzuki GSX-F Katana
    2001 Honda CBR600f4i
    2005 Honda CRF50
    2004 Yamaha R6
    2008 Suzuki DRZ400S
    2017 Husqvarna FE350

Good points made here. My thought for a while has been to get a supermoto and have a spare set of wheels/tires for riding dirt. It’s so easy to hop on and go so I’d likely be riding street the most, then hauling the bike somewhere to ride off road every now and then. Need to find the closest legal trails and rethink what makes the most sense. Maybe dual sport is the answer :notsure:

Top photo is from Jakethegardensnake on youtube. I've enjoyed watching his CRF's build series quite a bit. He's trying to have it so with some simple swaps he can go between sumo, dirt, enduro, or adv (ish). Kind of interesting seeing how he plans to go about it. If I'm remembering right he's swapped the suspension completely, done some comfort mods (headlight, seat, bars, controls, etc), and has the sumo portion down, at least as far as wheels/brakes go. Then currently he's going through and doing engine mods, swapped in a cbr cam and valves, exhaust, airbox mods, and about to tune and dyno.

I just added a furry friend to my pack and was looking at ways to bring her on the bike.
    :anonymous:

She’s already coming to work with me and doesn’t seem to be super skittish around loud noises. Lucky for me she’s small so a tank or tail bag would do it.

o_O Proper supermotos only have one front disk. All about being as light as possible

    Awww.

My dog Draco is mid 50#s and likes to sprawl over the whole back seat. Def can't fit in a pack.

I lost my 80 pound Doberman about three years ago and wasn’t ready to get another dog for a long time. He really was the goodest boy so I knew those paw prints would be hard to fill. He was a backseat boy for sure.

im using the term supermoto a bit too general perhaps

for me, it would be just regular street riding, so a dual disc would be great i believe

perhaps for someone actually racing and riding a supermoto track, then they may not care so much given the multiple terrain layouts

I considered it, but I would imagine it's very similar to my bike, the XSR700, as they have the same engine. Not even sure if they have different tuning, or the only difference is the plastics

As far as brand loyalty to someone else who mentioned it. I'm not exactly a die-hard Yamaha fan, but my dad and oldest brother have always owned yamahas and had nothing bad to say about them, so that's where I look first, and as far as appearance, they always hit the nail on the head for me.

Though thanks to this thread and some other friends not on TW, I am looking at the BMW and Honda options as well. The only hangup I have with Honda is that from what I have heard from people who owned them, while reliable they lack character? Not too sure how true that is but I'm sure I'll find out once I go test ride one.

Newly single so now the only limit is my imagination. Also, ya'll are making me feel quite young...class of 2010 here lol

Dual disc doesn’t mean as much as quality and what type of parts you’re using.

I’ll take the unsprung weight and stopping power of a 320 single over two 280s or whatever no problem. Heck my 670 lb 1890cc muscle cruiser had a single up front and I can definitely grab too much front in a hurry, can confirm haha.

I’ve never seen a SM with a dual front, as even the Husky 701 SM I saw had a single if I remember correctly. I’m sure it’s big, like 320+.

Not too sure on the other fancy expensive Euro brand SM bikes though. Maybe they do. Don’t care for owning something that’s meant to take a drop or twenty but also costs triple what a more reliable Japanese bike costs ha.

@uurx had me questioning my sanity about the 701. It is in fact a single disk.

its done more than you guys think

but like anything in search of performance, its all for a hairline of a difference, and sure prob better off just learning how to ride faster and better....

The brakes on my Yamaha Bolt are surprisingly good for a little cruiser. I can ride it at a decent pace using the front brake only and the single disc has plenty of stopping power. I think that bike is roughly 540lbs.

Back when Buell first started more serious production around 1994-1995 I was surprised by the use of a single disc front end. I can also attest to the straight up fact that the 320mm disc coupled with the 6 piston Performance Machine caliper and factory braided stainless brake hose that a single disc is sufficient to do a stoppie.
