Had a slightly weird one today: wife's coworker gets a hold of her and asks if I could help try and get a motorcycle up and running. His friend moved out of town and tried to sell it but couldn't and left it behind, so it's been sitting in a parking garage for about a year. From what I can tell it's a 90's or 2000's yamaha v-star 650. I think, I'm guessing off one photo.

I say sure, sounds fun, ask when he can meet (says now, basically) and start loading up tools. He gives me a call probably 20 minutes later and says he can't find the keys anymore and he thinks they're at his parents, he's going to check on Monday and get back to me.

Here's what I had loaded up to take with me to try to get it up and running again, anything I'm missing?

    - basic metric sockets/wrenches/screwdrivers/bits, my standard bike tool roll
    - carb specific screwdriver
    - carb cleaner
    - paper towels
    - empty gas can and full gas can (drain old, refill with new)
    - noco jump pack
    - piece of wire to pull strands out of for jets/emulsion tube cleaning

Seems like it should be pretty straightforward to get running again (drain tank, remove tank, pull carbs, remove bowls, clean jets, reassemble, new fuel, jump battery, crank, boom?) but who knows how it’ll go.

Pick up one of those cheap harbor freight transfer pumps in case you need to empty the old fuel out of the tank.

I would just try and jump it and boom off you go. No need to give him a full service/tune up unless that’s what it really takes to get it running.

That’s a good idea. They’ll protect your eyes in the event of a crash. Here I am feeling stupid for just squinting.

Epic ride today @03dumdum ! Thanks for letting me tag along! And thanks to your wife for taking pictures! Definitely a great way to break in my tires. No odd noises on the way home either.

I dont want to wash it tomorrow

Sounds like this isn't the first time it hasn't ran and wasn't running when they moved..

Kind of into it as a "huh, wonder if I can get it running" type of personal challenge haha

You must really like this bike more than the Ducati if you are washing it.

The Ducati was good for around town for an hour. 2 things i didnt like, the oil filter was 4" from the ground, and the dealership had to reset the light. Other than that, it was fun

I've seen so many unhelmeted moto accients come in with brain bleeds or just essentially blended mush for brains. The body may be technically alive, but nothing will ever be there again. I don't get on people too bad for gear but helmets are a sticking point for me.
