Last Spring I visited another FJR friend in VA who was hosting a tech day at his place in VA and one of our fellow forum members showed up on a Super Tenere he'd recently purchased. He offered it up to anyone who wanted to try it out. I passed at the time but another FJR buddy of ours took it out for about 30 minutes. He was planning an upcoming trip out West to visit his brother and had been considering one for exploring more unpaved areas of the country. One short test ride was all it took. Less than 10 days later he posted pics of his new to him Super Tenere on the forums. Says the Super Tenere and FJR are the perfect stable mates.

The second bike is closer and I could move the lights, or get rid of them. I just think they look better than the first bike's. Not sure either is a quality product though.

Found out today the tank has to be pulled to change the plugs. Kawasaki recommends a plug change every 7500 miles.
I'm thinking iridium for the first and only change.

Pulling tank to change plugs (and air filters on a street bike) is pretty standard. On my Versys it was fairly straightforward.

I'm supposed to change the plugs every 7500 miles as well, but I only do it during the valve adjustment (which I did at around 34k miles and I don't think it had one done prior to that...).

According to Yamaha my FJR should have plugs checked/changed every 8k miles. I can tell you that almost all of the FJR owners I know change plugs when they do a valve check and that's about it. My plugs currently have been in this bike for 33k miles and my performance and fuel economy are the same or so slightly degraded that I can't tell. I intend to put plugs in this winter when I do my next valve check and coolant change.

Check your manual again and make sure it doesn't specify "check" and not "change"

Specifies "change or replace" by the dealer every 7600 miles, or every oil change. Valve check/adjust is the same. Seems a bit often, lol. Maybe every other oil change seems more realistic. I tend to change oil every 5k, so that should be ok.

I'm going crazy looking at sport bikes. Every single listing is either for something with deferred maintenance, rashed fairings or questionable modifications, most of which I'd be fine with if they also weren't asking $5k+ for a 15+ year old bike. Considering it would be mostly for the track I wouldn't mind something not perfect, but not if I have to spend more than $5k on it.

    There is this bike:

    upload_2023-10-10_9-40-52.png

26k miles and it is the cleanest I've seen so far (no drops supposedly) but the owner decided to not do the 18k mile valve check, saying it was "optional". I'm considering just throwing $5k at him to take it home since I've always wanted a K6-K8 GSXR in that color...

How much oomph does it have to have to work as a track bike for you? If you look at some of the smaller displacement bikes I bet you can readily meet your budget. The MSRP for a Yamaha YZF-R3 is $5499 new, or the Honda CBR500R is $7299 new, so used they should be in your budget.

The issue is even 6 year old R3's are crazy overpriced, and it's not that I can't afford it but I don't see the value in it...

    upload_2023-10-10_9-53-0.png

Also I'd probably be OK with a Ninja 400 but they are even more expensive.

I've been looking at smaller displacement bikes to actually regularly take to the track once the BMW has it's maiden voyage. probably something in the 4-600 range though, i feel a 300 would be a hair too low
