I'd be curious to know how either would hold up on a motorcycle, exposed to the elements.

 

I use the FZ1 Fuseblock. Just under $100 without their wiring kit but you can easily wire it in yourself. Allows 6 circuits and you pick keyed or always hot. Small enough to put under the seat with room to spare and easy AF to hook up.

 

Sketchy one would live under the cover of my faux-tank pretty well protected from water and use any switches I want, aux beam you use their panel that is supposedly IP65, so should be fine in the rain, just don't submerge it kinda thing

Civility goes a long way and I'm glad it was known! You understood correctly, but no offense taken. I find it utterly silly to be offended by something like that. We just prefer to clarify it and don't refer to ourselves as such because there is a widespread myth that we are not Christians. Stating the full name of the faith clarifies that point. That's the ONLY reason being called Mormons is "offensive" but I still think that's the wrong word for it.




Okay, back to bikes, and now the topic of lights. Would something like Baja Designs be overkill to get a nice visible triangle of lights on a bike? I'm thinking waaaaay ahead on this. I'm not a fan of a lot of the square/cube lights I see on the bars, but I don't know enough about the ones I like the look of to trust them in a vibration rich environment that is also fully exposed to the weather. I'm pretty sure the BD lights would take anything I could throw at them.

Purely on looks, I like the Cyclops Aurora lights, but I don't know anything about their quality.

 

All of my accessories were powered by add a circuits to various things in the fuse box (lights, horn, ignition, etc), and the grounds were all soldered together and connected to the negative post on the battery with one ring terminal.

Only the SAE battery charger went straight to the battery.

 

I don't have a fuse box on the BMW, all digitally controlled

If I add in the lights this weekend I have some small covered bus bars I'll throw in there to clean stuff up. Hope battery to those and wire it all into that. I also need to figure out switch mounting. I really want to pull my dash off so I can get a good trace of the mounting points on the backside and cut out a plate to mount behind it and drill a few holes in for popping switches through.

SAE pig tail will stay directly attached to the battery though, for the record.

 

Ooh I like your switch mounting idea, definitely interested to see how that turns out.

 

Can you find an exploded parts diagram, or possibly a stripped down or wrecked bike to look at?

 

Cyclops is quality, I wouldn't be concerned using them. I've almost pulled the trigger on a set of their turn signals multiple times. The lights I have are cheap knockoff BD S2's, but I've eyed a set of legit S1's for a while too. Someday.

I should just need to pull the windshield off to get the cluster off, we'll see how the weekend goes!

 

Ah man let me see if I can find the lil fuse block assembly that I reused when I did aux wiring on the super tenere. Uses mini fuses has 3 circuits and is smol

 

I really like the Diode Dynamics SSC1 pod lights. They’ve got a version with a DOT legal cutoff to not blind oncoming traffic and the spread pattern is so wide.

 

There was a company making a 3 switch pod originally designed for Goldwings but really could be used on any bike. It attached on the left side handlebar using one of the bolts for the clutch perch as I recall. Switches were waterproof and a lot of Iron Butt riders used them. Can't recall the manufacturer.

What you're talking about is pretty simple to make, One thing to know is you don't need a fuse for every load. I needed something similar on my 500exc, switched and unswitched power, enough to run serious lights if needed, heated gear, GPS and tank bag power to charge a drone and most importantly I didn't want to hack into the bike's harness to do it. I used a single 12ga pigtail that goes to the battery, that's the only connection at the battery. The pigtail splits into 2 circuits, each are fused @ 15A (way more then is needed). One circuit feeds a relay that gets turned on by the taillight power (switched) when the key is turned on, that single wire is the only connection to the bike's harness. The other circuit is unswitched, they both run in their own sheath to the headlight area where I can plug up to 3 loads into each of the circuits (3 switched & 3 unswitched). I also wired in an SAE pigtail to the unswitched circuit back by the shock. That can be used as a battery maintainer port, heated gear or a place to plug in a small compressor. It's been on there 8 years and works perfectly, I've use it to run heated gear and grips. charge phones while camping, run a tire compressor, power GoPros and charge drone batteries, it cost about $20 to make. None of it's soldered, I used all metal crimps with glue impregnated heat shrink, it's stout.

I ended up using the fuse box assembly and relay and plugged it into the stock unised aux lighting circuit of my super tenere as it was WAAAAAAAY cleaner (I'll do some more digging there has to be a place you can buy the fuse box separately)

But one main fused relay that's switched on with key to supply current to the individual circuit fuse block is the way I'd go. Then you only have one extra connection at the battery (or if you want to get even simpler at the battery - assuming good sized wiring from the battery for chassis ground and starter relay positive - you could go to those spots for main leads)

 

you have a point on that one tbh since the cbr will rev about the same ish as the klx only down side is if kawi has updated the clutch.. the 400s were having issues with the clutch an blowing out at 2k miles.

Lol each state has its... Quirks. When I flew up to Oregon and bought the super tenere to ride 1200mi home I fully forgot that they pump gas for you like NJ. First station I went to and just went about my business and the attendant came out as I was grabbing the handle after putting cc in etc and was like bruuuuuuuh wtf. Second station the guy was like hey, legally for a motorcycle I have to operate the pump (put cc in, select grad etc) and hand you the handle then you can fill your bike on your own. Such a foreign concept to me haha.

 

That reminds me when we went to Portland we made sure to fill up in Washington so we wouldn’t need to deal with any attendants. Same with crossing NJ as well.
