When I'm busting a 2 foot drift to get out of my driveway and a few 8-15 inch drifts on my road, I don't think a bike is the ideal choice. Lol

Mainly due to elevation. PA is similar latitude, but the highest elevation in your state is only a little over 100 feet above the lowest in WY, and I live significantly higher than that.

I never said it was smart to do so.....One guy I know here in PA has one of those Chinese made 150cc dual sport styled bikes that he uses for his winter riding. He runs knobbies with sheet metal screws threaded in as spikes for snow and ice

I whine about chain maintenance. What makes you think I want track maintenance too! :p

Ha true! And I know this has been hashed out and you're pretty set on what you want, but my opinion is you shouldn't let chain maintenance limit your selection of bikes. It's not that bad honestly and I bet the time spent would be minimal, unless you're doing a lot of miles or really mudding it up

My road is gritty mess for the chain. The chain is only one aspect for me. The size and torque of the ST has appeal, the features for price are hard to find in an ADV bike, it sounds phenominal stock IMO, and I like that it's not ultra common. When looking for something that wasn't super expensive and less vibey it was just a bonus to get into shaft drive.

Screw the cold! The ARMY did their best to try to get me to like the cold weather. Plus my job is a year around outside thing. Riding is the cold is not happening with this guy. But I do get it for the ones that do.

Agreed. I see chain maintenance the same as airing tires back up in the heep, when off road. Gives me time at the locations to see what else might need work/maintenance. It’s like anything else..nothing but a thing to do.

We’ve already had that here at night a few times. My thing is, I’d definitely have to get another helmet. A MX style will freeze the head because they breathe so well.

I keep my visor cracked just a bit(b/c fog). My face is the only thing that gets cold. One of those neck gaiter things might help.................while I'm thinking about it.....off to Amazon

I wear a balaclava thing (this one specifically https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SJTNQLM?ie=UTF8 )

It keeps my neck and face warm while riding in the cold and keeps my helmet from getting gross in the heat!

You're not the only one! When I'm looking at used bikes the chain/sprocket condition is one of the first things I look at. I think it can be an insight into how diligent the owner is with maintenance. If I see them clean and nice shape that's a very good sign to me

I hear ya and agree it's an excellent bike, can't go wrong with a Yamaha. It will be night and day coming from the 500

Yup just part of the territory, and that's a good point it does get you down there looking things over

I'm gonna be test fitting road helmets after xmas, I'll be bringing in my gaiter, I hate the heat, I cant imagine wearing a full balaclava.
