Dumped my bike on a small burm yesterday, didnt get hurt, had to drag the bike to pick it up again on the hill, no lights, no cluster, no starter. I'm alone and an hour walk back to my truck.

I was stupid lucky, was able to bump start it down the hill.

Ended up just being a fuse, getting working on my tool kit. I have some small things, but need fuses and hex keys.

I'm headed out to pick up a kit and going out again tomorrow!

Put 25 miles on the monkey today putting around my little town. I live in the foothills so lots of sweeping curves and inclines. Found out it’ll only do 32 mph on the main road coming up the hill, but a solid 55 going down. Still had a blast. May have to hit up a couple of you guys for mod advice. Sprocket change, intake, exhaust and ecu are most likely coming. I also noticed that the brakes are terrible on the monkey. I may be spoiled because the LRS has really good brakes so it’ll take some getting used to- just need to adjust my follow distance. For now I’m doing a bunch of the aesthetic changes. Lights, bars and grips. I’ll probably make my own seat because I’m not super impressed with what’s out there. Debating reusing the original upholstery to keep the plaid look.
I’m not mad at the suspension surprisingly. I know @spencermarkd , I followed along when you did your grom suspension updates and I already had it in my mind that I was going to follow suit and copy everything you did, but I don’t mind how it rides for now. That may change as I get used to it but it’s moved down the list of priorities for me. I’ll hit you up when I get there. Haha.

Was also smiling like an idiot the whole time and got waves and thumbs ups from fellow riders so it was a great day.

4 quarts of JASO MA/MA2 synthetic and a quality filter isnt more than 30$..... (Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 or 15w-40 and a HiFlo Filtro filter.... been a long time user of the 5w-40 T6 but am going to switch to 15w-40 for super tenere reasons and just make that my standard for all the motos from here on out).

Not sure what the gearing is on the monkey, but totally stock, dropping a tooth in the front on the grom made a big difference in overall rideability. Stock on the grom was 15/34, going to 14/34 or 15/37 was a great sweet spot. Front sprocket changes are CHEAP... like ~10 bucks and totally worth it. I suggest JT sprockets.

I believe all the monkeys / groms use the same front n rear sprockets so this would be the 14tooth that would fit your monkey.

Depends on the red for me. It is great for visibility, though.

Im not sure if Im ready to change oil brands. Been using Honda GN4 dino oil and an OEM filter. Getting a kit - 5 quarts, filter, the 2 washers, and a glove/funnel for $55 shipped from Amazon.

    this is the synthetic kit:

Rocky Mountain ATV MC might have a similar kit, but no clue on the price. It might be worth checking them out.

I saw their Tusk kit, but I like that this one has an OEM filter. The tusk kit doesn't

I only have 1600 miles on the oil now

I thought they did OEM kits as well. I could be mistaken. They don't do them for the bikes I've had, so IDK lol.

Oh pssh, I wouldnt bother with the extra .2 quart. Dump a gallon of T6 5 or 15w-40 in her for 24$

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shell-Ro...-1-Gallon/869812640?athbdg=L1103&from=/search

and spin on a HiFlo Filtro HF204 for 9$

Great JASO MA/MA2 synthetic oil and a highly regarded filter for 31 bucks.

If you wanted to stick with Dino oil... its what I use in my tenere for extra shear strength (vs any synthetic 5w-40 like the T6 5w-40, like mentioned Ill be switching to 15w40 T6 because of the tenere and its unique needs #shaftdrive... but the 5w-40 has served me amazing for decades).
    https://www.walmart.com/ip/Shell-Ro...-1-Gallon/181236405?athbdg=L1100&from=/search

    16$. Also JASO MA/MA2 certified.

EDIT - I find it funny how SOOOO MANY bikes use the HF204 filter, My 919 uses it, my tenere uses it, a bunch of buddies Japanese bikes use it.

Do you have a Super Tenere thread where all your knowledge and parts links are centrally located? If not, you should. :boink:

So ironically enough I went to a kart track with the Grom and one of my friends showed up on his Z125 with a big bore kit and the Z125 was WAY better. I was actually riding it around and leaning over a decent amount (almost got my knee down), and then we traded bikes and I went back to the Grom. The Grom's pegs are much lower than the Z125s, and I have the peg sliders on. Well... on the first lap, at the tightest corner, I leaned the bike too far over, peg slider hit the ground and pushed the rear wheel up and I lowsided. I was pretty irritated that I crashed in my pristine, new to me suit and scuffed it up but the bike was OK. We were following someone else who was going slowly as well, so I wasn't even trying to ride fast. I think I just didn't get off the bike enough since we weren't going full pace and it bit me in the ass.

The Z125 also had Ohlins cartridges I think and just felt so much more planted. My bike wasn't very fun to ride after that.

Alright, in my late night roamings at work I am starting to look into my upcoming trip

In the not too distant future a buddy and I will set out on our bikes from Casper, Wyoming north to Buffalo, and then east on I-90 to see Devil's Tower. Neither of us have ever seen it. Then he wants to pop over the South Dakota border into Spearfish. He said there is a canyon there he wants to ride that is a bunch of sweeping turns. Looking at google I think he's downplaying it because he knows my comfort level in twisties is not very high and he's hoping I'll just roll with it. We shall see. Somewhere around Spearfish or Gillette we'll get a hotel (way cheaper in Gillette) as his riding limit is about 300 miles in a day. Lots of old Army injuries that make him sore after about 4-5 hours on the bike. Then we'll take the same route back to Casper the following day.

The route planning is built to assuage his range anxiety (he ran his bike nearly out of fuel last year), so I have pure gas fuel stops as way points, and to provide breaks every hour or so to stretch/snack/drink as needed on the way. Also, after Devil's Tower I routed it north on a smaller highway to get to Spearfish. Hoping that staying off I-90 will make the last bit of the trip a little more relaxed, and it only adds 10 minutes and 2 miles vs dropping down to the interstate.

    upload_2024-6-2_4-37-3.png

Anyway, I'm a bit of a tech-idiot. Is there some way I can save/share this route from my work computer here via email or to our phones? I'm trying to do all the planning to keep the load off him. He's got more than his share on his plate these last few years.

I suspect you're talking about riding Spearfish Canyon. I visited that area in 2018 for a FJR forum event. We stayed in Spearfish and rode day rides around the area including Devils Tower. The canyon ride is a must do IMO. Turns are all sweepers nothing super tight or peg scraping and we were 2-up on my bike. There are a couple of waterfalls to pull over and check out. Road follows a stream for miles and it is gorgeous.

Lol yeah big bore kit definitely changes things, but stock to stock... i dont remember my stock grom ever being so gutless as the Z. I could see the pegs being an issue, the z125 felt cramped from the seat to peg distance vs the OG grom (pegs lower)

Plan the same route in google my maps

click the Y arrow icon (circled in red) to add a directions layer then add in stops and then you can share (green circle)
