Coworker gave me this since he blew the engine. It’s a Trail Master 15. Any ideas for an engine swap? Looks like a Chinese engine is $200-300 which I really don’t want to spend on a Chinese bike.

Yeah looks like any Chinese Honda horizontal clone will fit.

Looks like a small bike and has a left hand rear brake?

Also what says the engine is blown? Those things are pretty bulletproof

Good candidate for 'lectric conversion. Not saying it's cheaper, just an option.
This prolly won't fit, just a quick search.

From what I understand is. He bought it new from a local dealer. Blew the engine before the first oil change and they took it to the dealer to repair and they denied them and said it would be $800 to repair. Then he took it home and tried to see what was wrong with it himself(zero mechanical knowledge) took off the clutch cover and then gave up.

Cheapest option will be a chinese engine replacement.

Anything else including electric will be more

Yesterday was super fun, went out with a group of friends to the Lake Berryessa Glory Hole (it's a spillway for level control at the dam). One of the guys in the group flew his drone into the hole and lost it because of the air pressure from the flowing water. :anonymous:

    upload_2025-3-2_17-55-48.png

Then, rode to Napa, ate lunch, and then rode to the Point Reyes lighthouse. The twisties were amazing and probably one of the top 3 locations I've ever ridden.

We also had to get creative with parking:

    upload_2025-3-2_17-57-31.png

    Views were amazing too:

    upload_2025-3-2_17-58-40.png

Then we rode to the Golden Gate bridge overlook for sunset:

    upload_2025-3-2_17-59-11.png

    upload_2025-3-2_17-59-40.png

All in all, a crazy fun day. We had ~8 people all on Cardos, which added to the experience. We did about 320 miles or so, great way to spend a Saturday.

Also I just sold the Grom today. Sad to see it go but I wasn't really using it and was tired of tripping over it in the garage.

just a couple of things tbh
Lot of fun over the weekend! Friday we rode for 3-4, hours Saturday 4ish hours? Sunday about 5ish hours
Emily has learned a lot! She is getting her shifting down and braking and turning in tight spots! She hasn't dropped the bike yet but about did today haha. Took her down the gravel roads as well to just explore and she enjoyed just cruising down a gravel road at 30mph. Got 30miles on her bike already!

I did drop mine a few times trying to ride through the woods section lmao not a trail just kinda pushing my way through. An extremely fun weekend!

Also this pic I dug the rear tire down and the bike was standing on its own but as you can see it was falling so Emily was trying to grab it LMAO she didn't make it

I have a hard time believing the engine went tits up and has a mechanical issue unless it ran low on oil. Does it have compression? I have seen ignition stator coils go bad resulting in no spark but thats a sub 50$ fix.

Rm85 project update. Shes running again!!! Got the .5mm over Wossner piston kit today in the mail earlier than expected yesterday afternoon (scheduled for tomorrow monday delivery).

Yesterday morning before I knew the piston was coming I set out to stone hone the cylinder, clearance the power valves, and chamfer the edges of the ports of the cylinder to give the ghetto rebuild the best bet for success for when I did get the piston later in the week. Realistically it needed probably another .5mm to 1mm over bore to be proper but im not spending that kind of money, a 9 dollar stone hone and some time should hopefully be good.

Honed the cylinder in the morning, went to lunch and a solid 10mile mtb ride and was going to go on a moto ride on the super tenere but opened the mailbox to a new piston/ring/wristpin!

Decided to forgo the moto ride and get to methodically putting the thing back together.

This is a mostly before pic of the head that got mangled by the chip of the ring that got smashed around....I took a stone on a Dremel and smoothed out everything protruding down into the cylinder as best I could (bottom right you can see a little of my progress) but there are obviously still divots in the head cus if I smoothed everything out compression would of been bad and things woulda been pretty thin to the water jacket... lets just call them air fuel combustion turbulence generators. Dont have an after pic unfortunately.

    20250301_110700.jpg

New piston left, old piston right. Old piston was in damn good condition (sans ring chip smashing) which really makes me think the previous rebuild from previous owner didnt calculate for overboring and clearancing the powervalves that protruded into the cylinder.

    20250301_181456.jpg

New piston fitted and things where proper clearance wise all through the stroke, really happy with the ghetto rebuild.

    20250301_205900.jpg

Got it all buttoned up around 11pm last night. Way too late to fire it up but my lord it had WAAAAAY more compression pushing the kick starting it vs what it had before it was comical. Today after a mtn bike / dirt jump bicycle date with a cutie I got home and sorted a few odds n ends and fired it up.... she runs GREAT. Cleaned the front master cylinder as the return orifice was blocked but GDAMN... this is ABSOLUTELY cheating in a "110 pit bike race". I actually feel bad for bending the rules this bad. 2nd n 3rd gear power wheelies. Im pretty sure this has more peak HP than my xt225.

Still winter here but some warm days are in the forecast for the next 2 weeks. S ow is almost all gone, now we need some rain to wash the salt off the roads. I got the itch to ride the Bonneville again. Soon........

New to me '07 FJR. Original old man owner, never down, 39XX miles, garage kept, stack of receipts etc. Might be a unicorn find. I need to dig a little deeper to confirm, but so far so good. First 120 miles went well.

My first FJR1300 was a 2007. Sadly it met an unplanned demise due to an asshole driver at 127k miles. These are rock solid incredibly sound machines with few known issues. There are a couple of recalls for that year so have a Yamaha dealer run the VIN and see if any are still open and eligible for repair. There are 3 decent FJR1300 specific forums, FJRiders.com being the current fave for many owners. PM me with any questions I'll be happy to try to help you out and answer them.

    My 2007 before it's demise

My 2014 that replaced the 2007

The 2013 that I added because I got it for such a good price I couldn't resist.

No problem. Where are you located? I have FJR friends in several states and Canada.
