Awesome... you'll pass. What type of bike are you interested in?

Was thinking about a CBR300R, but open to suggestions. I've done some research and determined that I'm not really interested in a cruiser or H-D style bike.

I would advise on getting a used bike for your first bike. You will drop it, and you will be sad when its new versus when its already used (not necessarily already dropped).

also, when I started i wanted a Ninja 250, but my friends told me id get bored quick. So i got a 500. Both are still fun, I just think a 250/300 wont be big enough. Dont be scared of the number of cc's (except dont get a 1000cc for your first bike. Grow into that).

Good call on going with a used bike, I don't even mind if I find one that has been dropped before (as long as it's structurally sound). My budget will be somewhere between $1,500 and $2,500 for the bike; already have the gear and cost of the permit/license covered.

Would a 250 be physically easier to ride versus a 500, or would both bikes be similar in terms of center of balance, weight, handling, etc.

    Thanks for the info!!

I dont have any personal experience with a 250. I would expect both to be similar in weight.

I would try to see if any dealers near you have a demo day or would let you test drive. If that doesnt work, you could try to test ride a bike from Craigslist. But usually people want cash in hand before you do that. Just in case you drop it on the ride.

you could also go to a dealer to see if you like the fit and weight when you're sitting on it, then check out Craiglist for a used one.

Sorry but that's terrible advice, don't start out on a supersport especially not a 1000.

    Yes.
Forgot about this thread. I’m back on 2 wheels after 2 years off. And look what was on Craig’s when I was ready to buy, an identical ape to my last one.

My vote is a used SV650 or MT-07. You will get bored of a 250 within a few months. A nice twin / triple will have a more usable powerband for most people and its pretty forgiving. Nothing like hitting the powerband of a supersport.

I have ridden my girlfriends ninja 300 a few times. On the highway I would say its sketchier since you dont have the power to get out of bad situations.

I've gotten a lot of great advice from everybody here, and it is very much appreciated. I am now doing research on the models listed and larger engine sizes and will continue educating myself.

I hadn't considered having the power on tap to accelerate out of a bad spot, but it makes sense now that I think about it. I will be staying off highways until I am able to get comfortable on the bike on my local roads and through certain motorcycle-friendly parks that I've already mapped out (and driven in my Mustang ;)).

Lol yeah I just got finished with the bars and stuff. I've had it for about a year but its about time for something bigger, it was a great bike to learn on though. I really posted it up for sale impulsively after seeing an ad for a WG that i really like, i'm in no rush to sell though and realistically, i'll probably have to wait until after winter.

The location says it all. All them straight line rides require no skill.

Numbers are less important but either way a super sport bike is not good for a beginner. Race tuned suspension and brakes get a beginner in trouble just as fast as a crack of a throttle can. Especially if you are on windy roads.
